...you've got to admit that steaming turds like John Della Bosca, and downright twisted misters like Troy Buswell, don't have easy analogues this side of the pond

I'll keep my views on Della to myself but it's worth noting that the heat is now on federal MP Belinda Neal... however you're general point is undeniably true - you'd struggle to find a NZ MP that would compare with some of the ogres that occupy state and federal parliament in Australia.

Labour Party leaflets that would be a donation, and I am presently struggling to a find a substantive distinction between me doing it and the Parliamentary Service doing it.

I'd've thought if the publication was clearly a Labour one, then the distinction would be difficult but if it was a government publication, even if it were heavily branded, surely it would be within the PS remit?

Oh, I disagree. I think that if someone wants to make a fuss about the photo, they'll find a way to make a fuss about the photo.

I don't disagree but the point I was making was that the agency ought to have been aware of the political environment - I do think this is a beat-up and I agree, if it wasn't the stock photo, it'd be the cost of the original artwork.

Graeme, do you mean "that that spending may constitute a donation"?

Seems like our ideal family gets around,
They were promoting affordable housing in OZ 3 months ago :)

It says something about the relative status of the respective Labo(u)r governments that I don't recall there being any discussion or examination of the Australian publication...

Fair point David. I don't think the situations are the same but the consequences may be...

  • Hard News: Breaking up the Band,

The Herald carries a story of Lange's selection for the Mangere by-election. The story I've heard, about this selection, is that Lange was never supposed to win selection. There was a large field, which included my late grandfather, and Lange was apparently a rank outsider but won the floor with a brilliant speech - perhaps this is covered in Bassett's book, I don't know.

David, the Clocks disaster was also a quite deliberate attempt to rip-off Coldplay whereas using stockphotos requires, not avoids, a royalty.

The provenance of the photograph is a non-issue.

I think the provenance of the photograph is a distraction, however it's precisely this kind of distraction that you'd expect to avoid by either using an agency, who'd manage this for you, or being directly assured of the origin of any photos. Helen's not loose with details so I expect she'll be pissed off that the content is being overshadowed by the wrapping.

  • Hard News: Breaking up the Band,

I'm not entirely confident the Crusaders offer that environment any more. Which is doubly disappointing having watched Ali Williams turn into 'not a munter'.

A good point. The transition from Smith to Deans was clearly seamless, where too from here?

The only other team that, I think, has a strong culture capable of managing someone like SBW is the Hurricanes... and as a former Wellingtonian, I'd love to see him play there.

  • Hard News: Breaking up the Band,

Thorn is one of the very few who has successfully made the transition and, I suspect, he's benefited a little from retirements and injuries (though those stats make fascinating reading). But you're right, SBW in the Crusaders would be the best possible pathway - I don't know that any other franchise could offer quite the same environment.

  • Hard News: Breaking up the Band,

I wonder where SBW would play if he converted - he'd have a lot to learn if he played in the loose forwards, perhaps at Centre?

Didn't Tracey used to record tackles broken by ABs? That'd be interesting (I missed the match).
