  • Legal Beagle: MMP Review #1: The Party…, in reply to Graeme Edgeler,

    Interesting:

President Pem Bird said the party has never ''seriously'' pursued the party vote and the article goes on to suggest they focus more on the party vote going forward.

Over the last 17 years, it has variously advantaged NZF, ACT, Alliance, Progressive, UF

Beyond the electoral arithmetic, it's arguable that the coattail rule, by putting the electorate MP in a pivotal position, has caused these parties to degenerate into one-man-bands. The Progressives (latterly the Jim Anderton Progressive Party) dissolved after Anderton retired. I'm certain that NZF and UF won't exist after the demise of Peters/Dunne.

Outside of Te Tai Tokerau, a party vote for Mana is indeed a wasted vote, I would have thought

In some ways. But unless I'm reading this wrong (which is very possible) Mana were only 8000 votes shy of a second seat.

RAM (who were more left wing than Mana. Bunch of Trots, which is probably why they imploded) got 87,000 votes in the 2003 Auckland Regional Council elections.

What implications for the Maori Party? They've never actively contested the list.

The only change that would affect them at all is abolishing overhangs, which would mean they'd get say 3/120 seats instead of 3/122.

Writing code that orders a metric fucktonne of coal in place of a dozen frocks and a box of shoes. It's <strike> Monday </strike> Tuesday, all my inputs require QA.

I'm sorry to have offended anyone, I'm sure that the journos of Greytown do a conscientious job.

In fact, I think that pretty much everyone in NZ comes to work and feels that they are doing a decent and useful job. That includes my own field of IT.

Surely starting work at 8am was the easy bit? Finding something that had happened in Greymouth in the past 24hrs that didn't reflect badly on the advertisers, your own or the editor's friends and family would be the hard bit.

    Journalists can mis-report many subjects

And do, more often than not. My father was a pilot, and he regularly pointed out the glaring errors in any aviation/aerospace stories that made the media. Economics stories are rubbish, science stories are rubbish. Possibly the sport stories are accurate and informed, I wouldn't know.

Assumes that the "clients" have a machine somewhere with internet access to copy their CV from/to USB in the first place.

I've seen machines where the state gets cleared down after every user. That would seem more sensible.

a comfortable bar, with food and toilets and seating

Have they upgraded? Last time I was there. it was a traditional NZ prolehole, with racing, pokies and dead-eyed derelicts. And those were just the staff from Vodafone next door...
