  • Hard News: Incomplete, inaccurate and misleading, in reply to Russell Brown,

Mind you, it's hard to expect more when they state in there:

As to the first matter, the Inquiries Act does not refer to the standard of proof that should be applied by an inquiry. In Re Erebus Royal Commission; Air New Zealand Ltd v Mahon the Privy Council observed with reference to the Erebus Royal Commission:

... The first rule is that the person making a finding in the exercise of such a jurisdiction must base his decision upon evidence that has some probative value in the sense described below.
    ...
The technical rules of evidence applicable to civil or criminal
litigation form no part of the rules of natural justice. What is required by the first rule is that the decision to make the finding must be based upon some material that tends logically to show the existence of facts consistent with the finding and that the reasoning supportive of the finding, if it be disclosed, is not logically self - contradictory.

A pretty low bar. It's hard to think how much different it could be, though. Basically, they just need to make up a story and tie it to some facts of their choice and not be actually logically contradictory in doing so, and the standards of proof are satisfied.

    Good grief.

It's quite a peculiar document. It looks long and complete, but reads like a stream of consciousness by someone trying to tell a very long and boring story to avoid answering a few simple questions.

She's "exonerated", but there's now a massive long public report on her relationship with Slater, rather than just a book making claims about it. I don't think it's going to be easily brushed off. This report is in the public record and freely available.

The “interfaith” bit probably panders to the island groupings more than to faith per se.

    I'd bet on that.

There could be a certain kind of wisdom in the (shadow) ministry title, although it kind of escapes me at present.

It's a way of giving kudos and mana to the guy who delivered the biggest majority Labour has anywhere, whilst almost sounding like it's some kind of politically correct thing. I'd be amazed if it does actually turn out to be Christians reaching out to Muslims and Hindus, and any of the hundreds of other faiths, though.

Yes, I don't see a Labour that doesn't believe CGT is a good idea any more. Just one that sees it's not a vote winner.

    I must be missing something.

Well, the unions aren't saying CGT should be scrapped, are they? That's Little making a strategic choice for Labour

Quality leadership requires the taking of some decisions because they are necessary in spite of their unpopularity.

That is true, but it also involves picking battles. I'm in favour of CGT too, but I don't see it as worth dying in a ditch over. It could easily be relegated to a second term thing, much the way National did with its unpopular asset sales.
