I'll agree with the "music matters most when you hear it young" meme, and that's why I actually find my favourite Lou Reed albums are the "New York"/"Songs for Drella"/"Magic and Loss" trifecta of the late '80s/early '90s when I first discovered Lou. Have always loved the Velvet Underground who were broken up before I was born (!) and Lou's solo '70s work, but the ones that speak to me most PERSONALLY are those later works. Listened to all three this week and boy, they still hold up wonderfully -- "Magic and Loss" and "Drella" speak to me about life and death at 42 even stronger than they did at 22, with a few more years and losses under the belt.

Yes, I thought the Stuff review was nonsense. I'm sure some punters expected nothing but Jam songs but I loved the eclectic mix of old, new, punk and pop. Great show. I wish I'd done Cohen as well but couldn't swing the cash!

Was Lawrence Arabia not eligible? I really am digging his Chant Darling album.

As a Yank living downunder, I'm just glad I don't have to make excuses for what's good about America any more... The old "we aren't ALL like Bush" and so forth. Feels very nice indeed to know Obama's in the Oval Office.

I didn't hear the Cyndi Lauper but I tell you, I was too zapped to go to Prodigy after Neil but the ENTIRE 3 k walk back to my home I could hear them like I was inside the tent. Would've been an amazing experience if I was 10 years younger I'm sure but I can't help wonder how many punters are going around saying 'eh? eh?" this week.

Great report as always Russell. I was so glad to finally see Neil live after years of near-misses. My report's on my blog, http://spatulaforum.blogspot.com/
It was such an interesting contrast to the vibe on the field pre-Rage Against the Machine last year when it seemed to be nothing but shirtless young guys wanting to punch someone. This time I was surrounded by bearded gents passing around their joints! Lovely.
