Hard News: Show some decency, in reply to
Yes, thanks Russell, and also Hebe.
I think that we have here the opposite of the "big lie" (of which "someone" once said, if it's a big enough lie then no one will believe you could have told such an un-truth, and so they'll believe you)---we have the "big truth"...it's a big enough truth, and has such implications, so they'll not believe you.

Whoever said the rich have no style (was that me just then?? :) ) was spot on, clearly.

Yep, same here. No career path, not even a start on one should a youngster be mad enough to want to try.
So, off they go overseas, taking their intellects with them.

Yes, it's been awful.
Those who have tried to get involved have had a hard time of it...trying to convince those who think they already know what is best for the country that the whole point of research is to find out new things, rather than simply try to confirm what the people handing out the money would like us to "discover".
Nothing new or interesting will come of this.

Very boring, because I'm old: Amazon UK for films (having gone through the month's Sight and Sound, and I always, according to the partner order "pretentious films, just because S&S told you to"), and the same place for CDs--also a bit of Marbecks--, because, like Geoff and others, I just need the physical thing (....and then TV from the BBC...)...

Except in Universities no one gets picked out to be a manager---people go to great lengths (and get paid a great deal---perhaps there's a clue there) to apply for themselves.
They are all self-selected---no coercion required!

Ditto.
Well, usually.
But more sensitive detectors would be good!

I did my motorcycle test in the UK a long time ago. The road part consisted of a guy with a clipboard telling where to go and then watching me while I was in sight, then walking to where I'd appear to watch me again. Lots of going up hills with junctions (safe hill starting with brake and clutch things to do) and round roundabouts etc. while he watched for brake lights, signalling etc.
On one of these sections, I got the instructions wrong (I think I went left instead of right---a weakness of mine) and so took a long time to get back to him! He showed no emotion whatsoever to my "gee, shucks" attempt to make light of it.
I passed, though!
