  • Cracker: Wallywood,

I have had some brilliant Chinese students (one is currently finishing a PhD) but others in desperation in my office because they cannot pass minimum requirements (even though university marking scales are weighted towards passing).

Being involved at the other end of this equation (i.e. IELTS TOEFL) there is always huge individual variance around suitability for Tertiary study, and not all of it is Language. The same, I would argue, is true of 'native English speakers'. Is this 'dumbing down' our universities, who due to funding restrictions may 'prioritise' foreign fee paying students (is there evidence for this?), but this coincides with other global trends of equal or greater significance, which would take a monumental thesis to de-construct, so I'll leave that to the professors.

Don't forget, cheats never prosper. Yeah, right!

  • Hard News: Good Newsing,

That Great Unwashed track is just fantastic. Time for some early FN vinyl to come out for a fondle. Might even play it on the turntable. In love with these times and The Dunedin Double good start.

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

During my studies, in stage 2 Geography, we did aerial photography(I have a strange mental block for the technical word) which included 3D topo maps. I learnt to do the binocular thing( although I don't recall using that term) so I could put down the stereoscope and just go googly eyed. It was very cool. Looking at 3D landscapes leap off a flat page, and the tests where you had to pick the highest point. Friend and dinner arrived.

  • Field Theory: It's a summer get-together,

Scramble to YouTube to see if 'magnetic underwear' brings any hits. Actually, I didn't. See if the rest of you can resist...

Off to start getting psyched for the Pixies.

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

I resisted posting this earlier (over on that other horsey thread) but now seems as appropriate as ever... Fair point.

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

A short comment apropos recordari's astigmatism remark: I now have one eye with perfect distance vision and the other with very limited sight (cataract.) 3D doesnt work for me, and couldnt have altered my perception of "Avatar."

I suspected as much. It's not too bad, but the cinema is one of the only places I need glasses, and 3D glasses over normal glasses ain't great in the first place, let alone the refractionary problems.

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

They're insisting that they did, and they are not defective because of it .

    Ahh, enough already!

Has anyone done 'WOODY WELL' yet?

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

Everyone knows Star Wars is all about Chaos Theory, anyway.

I'm not capable of that level of analysis, with or without Jaffas in my pocket, so I'm going with I just didn't like it.

If I said I found that amusing and entertaining, would that make me a bad person?

I do recall a little giggle around that point. Mind you, having met the man in his former life, all his movies make me giggle at some point.

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

Personally, I did actually feel entertained, because I was immersed in the feeling of horror and disgust, and the elation of survival I was supposed to feel.

I actually enjoyed Gladiator. [Runs and hides]

Look, I went into Avatar expecting, nay determined, to love the damn thing, if only because Craig, amongst others, hated it ;-)

    Can't I be a *pointy-headed* zero-gravity trapeze artist on ecstasy? :)

    Bingo.

Perhaps my astigmatism prevented me from getting the full effect of the 3D wonderfulness, but after a while it got a bit headachy. As for walking out, I could have, but I'd have to have woken up first...

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

If I wanted to analyse movies, I'd go and study film and media at university. I watch fictional movies for the same reason I read fictional books: to be entertained.

Ditto. The problem is, when Russell Crowe shouted 'are we not entertained' in my ear, the answer was 'No, not so much'. The floaty fluffy things drifting in the imagined realm between screen and audience also got old quickly. District 9 was unpredictable, visceral, and pertinent (well, I certainly felt so after Haiti). Much of what I got out of Avatar I get most days while watching kids TV with the young ones. I wanted something more.

Oh, and no worries Damian. Should have included a </wank> tag for mentioning it. You lucky bastard. Drooling over Kim Deal? Ditto.
