  • Hard News: Reviews: #NZGT and the Herald, in reply to Peter Calder,

    Fair point.

The best error I've seen in the Herald (probably computer generated) is the conversion of the abbreviation STG into a pound sign, as in this article:

    capitalising "Air Force" and ranks

The paper's usage is correct. Titles are capitalized, job descriptions are not.
"Flight Lieutenant Bigglesworth" / "the corporal looked up".

See Guardian style guide, under capitals.

(The actual howler in that article is "Rob Stockley sits solemn in his dining room". Should be "solemnly").

    QR codes are terminally uncool.

What is needed is a barcode format that's almost, but not quite, unlike a QR code, but would be cool, because new.

  • Hard News: We ... WHAT!?, in reply to Islander,

I find one of the (few) advantages of the Kindle is that you can look stuff up in a (very comprehensive) dictionary, so maybe that will go away again.

(Although I suspect if you mean phrases in Te Reo, foreign readers may need a g;lossary. The only Maori phrase English people know is "Kia Ora", and they mostly think it's a type of orange squash).

Something that occurs to me is that in the PM's previous career as an FX trader, he'd have been trading huge amounts of money over the phone. Not being understood in those circumstances can lose your employer lots of money.

Normally, FX is traded in a London / Essex accent, and I can hear a bit of that in the way Key talks. Maybe he should just revert to full-on East End when giving speeches (although that would detract from the true-blue Keeewee-ness that our politicians aspire to).

I guess the Communications Tribunal will be able to deal with this.

    At length.

    Repeatedly.

    On the taxpayer's dollar.

  • Legal Beagle: Alcohol Game Theory,

'We've given the young people of this country a chance to have a lower age,'' NZ First leader Winston Peters said.

We've given the old people of this country the chance to stop voting for bigoted morons

Time for an upper voting age.

    ..proof that tobacco was harmful

That was proved by finding mechanisms of causation to confirm the epidemiological results. You can demonstrate experimentally that cigarette smoke is mutagenic, etc.

    utilitarianism

That always takes me straight to Bentham's Panopticon. Something which I think many modern "liberals" would like us all to live in...

  • Legal Beagle: Alcohol Game Theory, in reply to Paul Rowe,

aren't they just sinking to faith-based, rather than evidence-based legislating

Maybe they consider that the human right to non-discrimination by age is more important than other considerations. That's why we have a democracy rather than rule by "experts".
