  • Hard News: The Big 2012 US Election PAS Thread,

I still don't get why Perigo says such awful things though. He doesn't have a dog in this game being an Auckland media pundit, who purports to hold libertarian views.

It would be like an American issuing threats against the slate of candidates in the Dunedin City Council elections. Pointlessly extremist.

I guess it is just a case of "he says (publishes) what other people think, usually while drinking at a pub on Friday night"

  • Hard News: The Big 2012 US Election PAS Thread, in reply to Russell Brown,

That last paragraph of Perigo's comments is particularly awful and shows no connection with reality.

What punches did the Republican Campaign pull? They seemed to attack him on everything from policy to origin, so I’m not quite sure what Perigo thinks they failed to mention. Although I don’t recall seeing any articles linking Obama with the vile tyranny of Emperor Nero so maybe that is what he meant?

Also, when did it become cool for a NZ pundit to use language like “filth unfit to live” about anyone, especially voters in another friendly country. If this is how angrily insane he gets over the decisions of foreign electors what kind of insanity does he think about New Zealand electors?

He actually makes Orson Scott Card’s views look sane by comparison

  • Hard News: The Watching World,

    Hi Lucy,

I take it you are living in the US. What is the mood like if so? Have you been past any voting booths so far?

My I post my annual dissatisfaction that the NZ weather is starting to look glorious about the time London's weather falls off the cliff.

  • OnPoint: The Source, in reply to Raymond A Francis,

Seems pretty standard operating procedure to plug a USB drive into a computer if you are there to upload a file.

It's also pretty normal to reward people who identify and notify you of security breaches.

In any event I don't see that Ira has done anything wrong and unless actual evidence arrives I will happily donate to his or Keith's legal defence fund.

In any event, this story, especially if it results in a criminal prosecution of Ira or Keith will make us the laughing stock of those who read the tech journals internationally. No one else will give a damm

The third wave of stories will no doubt be on crowd funded journalism, since Keith has met his target again

Scary stuff, certainly worth a donation. I'll even sign a petition if Keith gets locked up on Soames Island

Surely RNZ has a saucy watershed?

  • Hard News: For want of some purpose,

It seems that a large part of the problem is that the people* in control, and those who will be consulted (newspaper journalists, owners of spectrum, advertising companies, party funders etc) are either not really that convinced of the need for public broadcasting in times of a budget deficit, or have ulterior motives. So in such an environment, even good, practical ideas around public broadcasting will probably be ignored or discounted.

In the absence of anyone convincing the government to funding and distributing public content via a public service channel, has anyone got any plans to start some of web based public broadcaster?

The webcaster model has flaws, that being that one pretty much needs to exclude people without computers or broadband, but it does offer a cheaper production or delivery process, if the model used by say Twit.tv can be followed. Combine this with some sort of kick starter/crowd funding for running costs (similar to Public Address) and an app with a payment mechanism and it might have the potential to pay for itself, or at least, defray some of the costs. It would probably only work for talking head style shows, but that would be better than nothing so long as interesting people and topics remained.
