  • Hard News: Food and drink,

I saw some slices at the Victoria staff club no longer than one hour ago.

Ok, now I really want a toasted sandwich. And a mug of truly appalling (but bottomless!) coffee. And a conversation with some mathematicians.

  • Hard News: Food and drink,

    toasted sandwiches with pavlova filling.

I find this one intriguing. I bet it has some pretty interesting contrasts in texture. Flavour, too, especially if you use salted butter on the bread. If you threw a couple of chocolate chips in, it would practically be a s'more. Or you could cut it on the diagonal, stand one half on end, slosh on some raspberry coulis, and it would be glam.

My favourite toastie in the omg-that-sounds-awful category: cheese and ketchup.

  • Hard News: Food and drink,

How about this? Is it real food? There's even purple potato paste, if you scroll down a bit.

Hey, don't be dissin' the frozen purees. They're excellent for when you want to make broccoli mousse, broccoli pate de fruits, broccoli buttercream...

The people's pizza base ain't bread
    It's more a scone-type dough instead
    Inside your Sunday roasting pan
With pineapple out of a can

So bake that pizza, bake it good
The people's pizza, like you should
And though a kilo's far too dear
Some cheddar cheese is great on here

We do not want bourgeois legumes
    Nor basil pesto's garlic fumes
We do not trust your foreign cheese
    Just honest kiwi tucker, please

So bake that pizza, bake it good
The people's pizza, like you should
Through Gio's flinch and Danielle's tear
We'll keep the red spag flowing here

  • Hard News: Food and drink,

Sorry, as a regular consumer of 1980s era home made New Zealand Pizza I demand that Spaghetti be used rather than Baked Beans.

Perhaps baked beans was an acceptable variation in some areas. Specialties of the region, etc.

But, yes, in many other ways it's stunningly authentic.

That one loses points for being on a "pizza base".

  • Hard News: Food and drink,

(Just as I was typing that I saw a food in a minute "cannelloni" on the telly which drove me to instant despair. If you need me I'll be in the bathroom, crying.)

Proposal for entertainment at next PAS gathering: put Giovanni in a room and force him to watch as someone prepares a Genuine Kiwi Pizza c.1980.

'proletarian felafel' and 'bourgeois legume croquettes'

I looked quite carefully, but it seems like nobody has yet mentioned "totalitarian lentils". Tragic.

  • Hard News: Food and drink,

But anyone giving me shit for my Hubbards Golden Sunrise porridge sachets? Can bite me.

While IN NO WAY putting my judgy hat on, I do have a Sekrit Porridge Technique to offer anyone who wants it:

    1) Before you go to bed, put 1/4 cup rolled oats and 1/2 cup water in your porridge bowl, add a good pinch of salt, put it in the fridge overnight.

    2) As soon as you get into the kitchen in the morning, take the bowl out of the fridge and microwave it for one minute. Go on and do some more of your morning things.

    3) Take out the bowl, stir, put back in, microwave one more minute.

    4) Eat.
