Wow - that was my first guess too. Am looking forward to hearing more about what you learned around the kitchen table.
Wow, yourself, Sacha. I would never have thought you would have known who my Dad was. I look forward to talking to you about him, someday, with some alcohol involved, of course.

I have to say I was enormously proud of myself the other night in the supermarket for not even wanting to taste the Cadbury's samples on offer.
As for the Media7 show, something really needs to be done about media intrusion. I was once very peripherally involved in a very high profile case, long over, and only as a bit player. But my place of work abutted a public walkway. A journalist from TVNZ approached me with his cameraman because they wanted to take footage in our playground. At the time, we were grieving the loss of one our children - and this man wanted to take poignant pictures of the kindergarten playground this child had once played in, and it was this specific child's death they were interested in. He asked me if he could film in the playground. I told him no, the playground was private property, only for him to snort and say that the walkway was public, and that if I refused, they would just take footage from there. I was so upset, I couldn't think. I was lucky enough that this wasn't my property, and it wasn't my call. I made that call to my employer who said it was okay for them to come in. We locked ourselves in that kindergarten and sobbed until they had gone, with horror at the cavalier attitude they had to our feelings. And we weren't the main players. How on earth do these people justify their behaviour, at times? Sure, they couldn't go on Ms DP's property, but they waited down her driveway. On a public road. Because they're allowed to. Really, they just disgust me. If there's nothing the law can do, surely the editors of the Sunday rags need to take a good look at their morality. And as for that woman - Miriana Alexander. Are you kidding me? Justifying all the way. It's okay to hound someone because you are standing in a public place whilst you take intrusive photos? Others here are more qualified than me to guess what the solutions are, here. And I still just want to stroke Kristin's hair and tell her that she's okay, that this will all die down, and that those bastards will get theirs. -
I'm struggling to think of a job I've ever had that was a blind bit of use to anyone, in or out of the country.
Now, now, Danielle. I happen to think that one of your jobs, as a librarian, has done us all a huge service. I shudder to think what my life would look like without books. That I borrowed from a library. That was supported by people who make sure that we have interesting books to read, who help us with our enquiries and who are very knowledgable about the very valuable database they are custodians of. You see? More importantly, you brought yourself back here, and IMHO that counts for alot. Can't have a country without peoples can you? And you certainly can't have a successful country without learned, well read people. That's how I see what David has written. Some may say that my job is not exportable. I say that by investing my time and energy into Mangere's three and four year olds, I am almost certainly imbuing some future citzens who will be of huge use to their country, with my own personal brand of engagement with the world. Perhaps we all have to learn to see what we do, or what we could do, as being of benefit.

His name wouldn't have been Tom, would it?
That's my daddy. He would have liked you. A lot.

I heart you for many reasons, David Slack, but one of them is your unerring ability to get to the crux without all the bullshit. Your post made me think about my extended family and who has exportable leanings. My father, too, dealt in exports all his life - as the managing director (these days I don't know what it means, but in those days it meant he ran things in a very hands on way) of a very large company that had dealings all around in the world, in it's heyday. Now? That company is not a company at all, it's name graces only a park in Waitakere City. There are many reasons why, but IMHO, the heart of it lies with the people who took it over who were very much in it for themselves and what profit they could gain from it. They stripped the company, and then bailed out. My Dad, who was so passionate about New Zealand that the very thought of importing what we could make ourselves, made him screw up his face with rage (and go all red, it was very impressive) would be turning in his urn of ashes. He was a big thinker, my Dad. And your post so reminded me of him - it's about getting out there, and making sure that this country we love so much is sustainable for our kids. However you do it, it has to be good for the future of our little old piece of paradise. Crosses and circles to you my friend.

I haven't been following this case at all, and then this morning I happened upon a little coverage in the Herald. The first couple of paragraphs were all I needed to see. What does this man think he gains from some of the shit he's spewing?

we headed across Dominion Rd then half way down and found a beauty in 3 kings/ Mt Roskill which has served us well
I just have to reiterate how much I love your house. You took good bones and made it completely and utterly yours. Renting just wouldn't be the same. Danielle is right.

But what was probably going on here, too, was a desperate "Here I am - now will you go away?" offering to the pestilential media that has been, by her account, virtually spying on her since the affair was made public.
I would have thought so too, Sacha.

Oh Steve, Steve, Steve. Luvs ya!

So glad you finally have a house, Damian. And it's all so soon after having your system cleansed!
