Hard News: #BDOMemories, in reply to
That's good to read.
Around these parts I see TV screens on walls beside lifts and in the headrests of taxi seats playing endless advertising (and nothing but advertising), ads trying to pretend they're really public service announcements in university toilets and once I put the car radio on to the traffic channel in the hope it might offer information on traffic conditions (which I thought was what it offered, considering how many signs it has around the road network advertising its frequency) only for my wife to yell at me to turn the bloody thing off cos it was nothing more than endless advertorial. At least Beijing Music Radio does actually play music (and quite a variety, and often really good) and very little DJ blether between its ads. My memory of NZ commercial radio has less variety and less good music, more DJ blether and the same amount of advertising. My last trip to NZ (Feb 2010) left me with the impression NZ TV is just as ad heavy as always (oh wait, remember when Sundays were ad free?). There's nothing wrong with either making money or advertising, but I do wish this modern world would allow us a bit more time and space away from the constant barrage of "Buy this!" and to simply enjoy ourselves.
Clearly I should spend more time at music festivals.

greeted with the same weird pissiness by a couple of the commenters.
I find it best to avoid the comment threads on NZ's mainstream media sites. They leave me thinking our compatriots are mean-spirited illiterates. Much better to hang out here where the commenters can write and nastiness is very quickly nipped in the bud.

With BDO, they could have done things that would have made them more money
It would be nice if that didn't seem so unusual these days. Are such people really a dying breed? Because it all seems to be about the money these days. I'm now actually a little sad I don't have any BDO memories to contribute.

Translation error. Should say: 50 years of Spring Festival transport in pictures.
-
holiday traffic. Title is "Did you get a ticket in 2012? - 50 years of Spring Festival [i.e. Chinese New Year] in pictures. Text is all in Chinese, but the pictures speak for themselves. Some of those older photos were still true when I first arrived in China (and not just police in green and the lack of high speed trains. I've certainly seen plenty of desperate people climb through the train windows, hanging from and even sleeping on luggage racks). The overcrowding forcing train stations to set up temporary structures on their forecourts hasn't changed at all. So, if you don't have family in China, do not try to travel here at Chinese New Year.
Snow is forecast. Hope it comes soon, because this air is foul, and I'd like the snow out of the way before I have to cross a mountain range in a couple of days.

wikipedia, blacked out last night, well…
Only the English version, which I find odd. Aren't they protesting proposed US laws? the USA doesn't have an official language, and there must be millions of people in the US who can quickly and easily bypass the blackout by switching languages.

Well, yes, I did nearly expand my "I did enjoy those ads" to include, along with a complaint about a bar in Auckland Airport's transit lounge, a comment about being unpleasantly surprised to see on the wall of a female friend's room at Knox College a Speight's poster patiently explaining that Real Southern Men were misogynistic gits. At least those old Speight's ads could be taken tongue in cheek (as I did). I remember DB ads about the same time that involved large horses and took themselves extremely seriously. And there was Lion Red's nonsensical bollocks.

it’s a hard road finding the perfect woman
Does Speight's still make ads like that?

Sadly YouTube and China's Net Nanny have a bit of an unresolved disagreement. And where I am is rather lacking in avian anything, let alone holiday hi-jinks. Dunno if they're frozen out or choked out (our air has been very flavoursome the last few days), but they ain't here. They must be all down your way holiday hi-jinking. But I do consider myself reassured.
