  • Hard News: Killing Volume,

    It does strike me that:
    - print publishing is a good way to lose money fast
    - web publishing lets you lose money more slowly, depending on the scale of promotion, etc
    - the only people who buy/read print magazines are those to old and/or stupid to work the internets
    - the recorded music industry is in decline and has shrinking ad budgets

So making a new print magazine aimed at youngish music fans seems to me as a good way to fail.

  • Hard News: #JohnDotBanks and all, in reply to Hebe,

Maybe if National became a left-wing party.

(There is precedent for this - the US Democrats and Republicans effectively swapped political sides during the late 19th / early 20th century).

  • Hard News: #JohnDotBanks and all,

ACT getting Epsom gives National an effective bonus seat, even if they got no further seats. Why? Because ACT's seat does not count against the National total seats

    Well pointed out.

That is a very good reason to move to single vote MMP (where the party vote is given to the party of each electors chosen candidate). This would remove the abilit for that kind of abuse, because not running a candidate or running a non-campaign would lose party votes.

  • Legal Beagle: The law may be that stupid,

If someone runs as a parliamentary and a local candidate (as Banks did), do they have to keep their funds separate? How does it work - do candidate donations belong to the party if they have one?

Should a by election in Epsom prove necessary

Won't be a (short term) problem though. They'll elect a National MP, or an ACT MP if NACT have the chutzpah to keep the deal going.

You can have corrupt electorates as well as corrupt politicians.

  • Hard News: It's Choice, bro, in reply to Robyn Gallagher,

Also, by their somewhat stretched definition of 'Europe' we could probably join and enter a side. I reckon a version of 'Holidays in Cambodia' by the Wellington Ukelele Orchestra might win.

    Awesome.

More houseporn is just what the economy needs. Get people back to thinking that they don't need to worry about their shitty job and dickhead boss - just get a huge mortgage, paint that house in Grey Lynn gray and house price inflation (sorry; property appreciation) will take care of the rest.

Why don't they just call it False Consciousness Channel and be done with it?

He likes his pokies, that John Banks. Didn't much of the cash from pokies in the pubs he owned get diverted into his political campaigns as the designated 'charity'?

That information should be held by Archives or the Defence Force. Given that there would be little reason to keep them closed, you should be able to ask for them to be opened. Personnel records for those executed, court martial records and unit diaries would be the places to look.

  • Hard News: War, now and then,

It's interesting as a Brit, to see how big a thing this is. Growing up in England in the 60s and 70s, Remembrance Day wasn't much of an event - it was much like Lifeboat Day or other charitable collections. That, I think, was because for the wartime generation, *everyone* had been *in* the war - whether overseas or back home as a civilian getting bombed.

There was also the possibility of nuclear war right up until 1989.

It's interesting that as such real threats to the nation receded and the government embarked on small wars of (re-)colonisation, the idea of 'remembrance' has been pushed much harder in the UK.
