  • Field Theory: Cricketucation,

I love cricket, but as a tailender myself I always find it odd that everyone has to bat but not everyone has to bowl.

Same as Softball. And Baseball (National League anyway, if not the American League).

And isn't it weird how everyone is allowed to shoot at the goal in football, but only the goalkeeper is allowed to use his or hers hands to stop goals being scored :-)

    And ... etc.

  • Field Theory: Cricketucation,

My idea for cricket is as follows...

For rugby, so as to make teams rely upon scoring tries, instead of relying on penalty kicks, penalties should be worth 20 points. People would stop cheating and then everyone would actually have to work to get over the line :-)

  • Hard News: A Full Sense of Nationhood,

The Maori classrooms at my school had a whole lot of Bible verses (in Maori) tacked up on the walls. At age sixteen, I thought this was weird, given that we were there to learn the language. Looking back, I'd consider it a fairly clear contravention of the supposed secularity of public education.

Ahh, but you were 16. And, one assumes, at high school. Only primary schools are (required to be) secular in New Zealand.

    Education Act 1964:
79 Attendance at religious instruction or observances not compulsory
    (1) No pupil enrolled at a State primary school shall be required to attend or take part in any such instruction or observances if any parent or guardian of the pupil does not wish the pupil to take part therein and makes his or her wishes known in writing to the Head Teacher of the school.

    (2) Any parent or guardian who has given such an indication of wishes may at any time withdraw it.

    ...

81 Schools other than State primary schools not affected
Nothing in this Act shall affect religious instruction or religious observances in schools other than State primary schools.

  • OnPoint: Don’t let them eat cake,

"hoon" is also more useful than "boy racer" since it can also be used as a verb

You haven't come across the appalling boy-race in our wonderful news media, then?

  • Field Theory: It's called Super for a reason,

  • Field Theory: It's called Super for a reason,

That's like saying Daniel Carter should only kick goals, he should never tackle or run the ball, or kick in open play.

It sounds stupid, but is it? He'd probably do the non goal-kicking stuff, rather than the goal-kicking, and he might be an awesome goal-kicker, but does it really strike you as that unlikely that there is no-one out there who ain't great at the rest of rugby, but is better than DC at goal-kicking?

    Of course there is.

And that there is no-one out there who couldn't hold a candle to DC at kicking and running with the ball, but could tackle better than him?

Of course there is. They're not playing international rugby because tackling is all they do and that ain't good enough, but why would you think it impossible?

It's called Super for a reason

Are they also called Rose, Oranage Sugar, Feista, Bud, Banjo or Heidi for a reason?

  • Holiday Book Club,

I'd be a fan of a permanent book thread if that were possible?

As it happens, it is. Keep posting comments to this thread and it will certainly stay on the front page!

  • Holiday Book Club,

On 'The Wire' vibe...does anyone know if we're going to get 'Generation Kill' out here? Or is that something I'll have to look elsewhere for?

PAS DVD addict to the resuce! Generation Kill will be available in NZ later this year.

Also be aware that after series two I think, it was not produced in zone 4 format so you have to get creative about getting hold of the rest of the series.

I'm pretty sure it was (though not season 5, yet), they just took their sweet time about it. So long in fact, that I finally succumbed to Amazon.com. Haven't looked back. Well, okay, I have (i.e. I'm going to wait for Generation Kill ) but still...

  • Holiday Book Club,

Geoff - it would definitely a good idea to watch season one first.

You could get a fair bit of the story of season 2 without it, but you'd be missing A LOT without the season 1 background.
