oppresive and bullying ?... harden up bro.

everyone paying for a classical music station for people who dont give a shit about it is way worse than dance music for people who cant dance.

I'm not asking you to pay for my musical taste but you seem to think it is your privilege that i pay for yours based on some outmoded ideal of higher arts and culture ?

even your version of free couldn't possibly be cheaper than one dollar per NZer per year, and because I like that it employs people who have a passion for the less than commercial musical genres and knows how to communicate it.

so why should my one dollar subsidise your altruistic fetish ? how about user pays then ? a paid subscription to indulge your particular tastes ? whats it worth to you ? Try getting a facebook campaign to implement a license fee as they do in Finland to subsidise public broadcasting and you'll be dealing with the proverbial cup of cold sick.

Even better, take it to the streets if you dont think theres much worth in net based media protest ?

and interestringly, maybe we should compare carbon footprints of radio vs web based media as to relative costs to the environment ?

travel costs and building maintenance would soon add a bit to your $1 a day and is that including GST ?

Shitloads of old school DJs are selling their vinyl in favour of 'serato', a kiwi invention that converts digital signal to output delivery by turntable, so it still has some uses, and i got a not too bad collection of old school mp3's thanx very much.

besides we cant burn vinyl silly, think of the environment ? maybe we can build homeless shelters out of them instead ?

get with the program fella !!!

Terrific, and of course whenever there's a new kind of music on the scene the thing you've got to do is forget about everything that came before it. What a fucking depressing idea of culture.

I'm not saying forget it, but not to continually subsidise it with taxpayer money. It's evolutionary, like hanging on to obsolete cultural traditions is a waste of time or keeping that cassette walkman in your shed thinking casesttes are gonna make a come back.

I 've been to an ex radio NZ warehouse full of old gear and records. So why bother revamping the gear but not the programming ?

I'll keep listening to Nina and Wolfgang some of the time. It's nice to know that for the grand price of 1 dollar per New Zealander per year there's a place where I can do that.

Want me to post you some 'free' links you can program and listen to in your own time ?

it's inevitable what with the ageing population and changing market, the dominace of new media 2.0 and increasing broadband receptivity to include cars that radio as it is will disappear. It's main function these days is to collect ad revenue for artist via apra and as ad revenue decreases to more web/tv based media, radio, and all those involved, will go the way of the dinosaurs.

you should know this Russell ? I say put it out of it's misery ? does that sound like a media7 debate :)

its not that classical music is useless and redundant Gio, just irrelevent to most. It's had it's day and so time to move on. Which is how i feel about the concert program and radio in general.

Musically, it's all about dubstep and UKfunky now, which if most of them dead white euro composers from eons ago were alive now, they'd me making instead.

...and you still have to brown nose after you submit your application...uhhh, i mean lobby to get the funding in which case its still who you know and who you know who knows somebody whose opinion counts for something in the highly subjective and cliquey arts sector.

I've found it tends to be the usual suspects who keep heading back to the trough for successive handouts, which begs the question. If their art was any good why does it need to be subsidised ?

Kids should have access to culture broadly, and not be constrained by what is thought by others to be "relevant" and "accessible."

going to have to re write the entire school curriculum to not be eurocentric and designed to churn out good lil capitalists then eh ?
