  • Hard News: The Vision Thing,

I was going to satirically suggest that Shearer was taking policy advice from Farrar at Kiwifoo, but left it out as too snarky.

Truth is stranger than speculation, evidently.

I suspect Scott must be a very good lawyer.

When I was extensively involved with the legal profession (VC funded startup in the late 90's) there was a great deal of expensive work by both sides in us explaining to the lawyers what we actually wanted to achieve and avoid. There certainly wasn't any advice from the legal side on how to do it better.

And these were top-tier London lawyers,

I suspect that degrees for overseas students are a Veblen good. Besides this, a degree course for a foreign student has many valuable attributes that aren't created by the university:
    - putting thousands of kilometres between the student and their parents
    - an economic route to foreign residence (compared to the Kim Dotcom $10mln tarrif, that is)
    - the chance to convince future employers that you are a highly skilled overseas trained talent, when in fact you spent three years playing videogames and can just about read the menu in McDonalds

(Not to be mean about our hard working overseas students - NZers would be even worse if we could afford foreign schooling).

  • Hard News: The Vision Thing,

I would suggest that every child in NZ *is*, by global standards, getting an excellent education. We might not get the grades of Singapore or Korea, but we don't have the soul and creativity destroying drudgery. We've so far managed to avoid a lot of the middle-class opt out of the UK and the GPA-chasing of the US.

There are challenges for schools: they need to stop breaking the law by charging compulsory fees, we need to remove subsidies from private schools and make all schools accountable to the community, and most of all we need to remove the vestiges of feudalism - training the upper classes for leadership and the proles for serfdom.

But most of the problem is stopping National from undermining the hard work of just about everyone in the sector.

Nice phrase. Might appeal to those who get all antsy if you use the words "false consciousness".

Are there ever substantial traffic delays between Puhoi and Wellsford outside holiday periods?

Well, yeah. You'd notice, if you ever drive south, a whole lot of big sheds where they make and store stuff. These are a remnant of the 20th century and are called "factories" and "warehouses".

I would guess that they have some need for a port to ship stuff overseas. If the port closed, they might either truck the stuff they deal with to Tauranga, or move their operations elsewhere.

What about all the stuff being trucked from Tauranga to and from Auckland?
