that is speculation though simon. When I make a music recording and sell it to someone on cd i'm not doing it cos I think I'm going to sell it to them again when the next audio format comes out, and remember indie labels make up 40% of the market.
I also don't think the majors throughout history have been rubbing their hands in anticipation of the next format change.

Hardly speculation, go and read Walter Yetnikov's book, read dozens of industry histories written from the inside and out. The development of the compact disc was driven by the philosophy of replacement. It's been a cornerstone of the industry for decades.

And indies are only about 30% but rising. It was far far less than that before the digital era.

Selling people the things they thought they already owned is a cornerstone of the industry and, like DRM, no matter how well you argue it (and you do) a reason why people feel ripped off.

I myself bought a Kraftwerk album a couple of years back. I play much of my music on my computer while I work...the fucking thing had copyright protection on it and wouldn't play on that or my car. I was furious, I had been ripped off, so I stole a copy online.

I'm tech savvy and record industry savvy and I was angry...just imagine how my cousin or brother or the guy next door who are none of those things feel.

I bought a Carl Craig collection on iTunes....legally. I legally burnt a CD of it. The only place the CD plays is in my bloody iTunes....nowhere else. I feel ripped off again as I'd quite like to play it in the car..legally...but I can't.

People hate the music industry but love the music. They feel conned, ripped off, screwed and DRM, regardless of how well it's tuned or developed, adds to that and plays a huge part in the downturn of the recording industry. It's a contributing factor in piracy, not a solution.

I think that this is being restricted in the past more because to not restrict it in the past would me complete loss of control of distribution, not that media distributors want to deny you easy access to your purchased music, just because they haven't figured technology to enable this to happen without abuse by third parties.

No, no..one of the core elements of the business model used by the music industry over the decades since, well whenever, is enforced redundancy.

The massive profits that the big six earned from the eighties onwards came more from replacement of technologically redundant items already owned by the consumer as from new releases. The end of that cycle in the early part of this decade is a key reason why industry sales have fallen so much and is often ignored.

  • Hard News: Mo' Indexing,

I must have missed what they're measuring.

Me too...having spent much time in areas in places like Jawa Tengah where families live in one room with a dirt floor, where 60% have no access to clean running water and although the filthy stream running down next to your road floods every year for a week or two but you need to stay in the room because that's all you have, I find the application of the word deprived to folks that don't have a car or access to a phone or are forced to live on a benefit, as relative as it might be, rather bizarre.

  • Hard News: A little understanding,

I had a 12" mix that was either 16 or 18 minutes long (can't remember exactly but it was looonnngg) and I too used it to clear the club when I DJ'd in the 80s.

This is the Cowley mix. Huge synth noises going crazy from about 7 minutes onwards and quite a revolutionary dance record.

Also, as the review says, excellent if the Becks catches up and you need to rush to the loo. In my DJing days records of that length were well handy.

  • Hard News: A little understanding,

Oh, and also Bob Frisbee kinda sold me last Friday on his theory that the best version of 'I Feel Love' is the original album version.

It's more concise but I'm a sucker for the twisted Patrick Cowley 15 minuter, although the last five for are great for ending the party and sending everyone home.

  • Hard News: A little understanding,

Huge congrats to you both, Russell & Fiona. When you throw out numbers like 20 years I get that we-are-not-in-Bonnington-Square-anymore feeling again. It's been a quick few decades, no?

dancing maniacally to 'Le Freak' and 'I Feel Love'

I wonder what the young lad who arrived at Rip It Up all those years ago would've thought about that ;)

  • Hard News: Google Trending and MGMT,

As above, surely you have better things to do than chasing born again pixies on the web, Simon.

It's a good'un though. We can only aspire.....

apart from utilising the rather excellent Phillips cdr component CD

yep, they are the bomb. I had one for close to a decade (from back when blank CDs were $10 each) until it gave up the ghost last year.

  • Hard News: Google Trending and MGMT,

I guess we're not quite at 'digital downloads wipes out real world sales' just yet, maybe its different for different genres.

Nah it's still only 10-20% on average but on things like pop / R'n'B etc its way higher. That said my 13 year old just asked for CD copies of the things she'd bought from iTunes.

Here in Indo a legit album is only about $6 so it's not an issue (pirate copies are about $1)

  • Hard News: Google Trending and MGMT,

But the main thing is the music.

Yep but a Miles Davis LP under yer arm has a much higher hip value than an MP3 of the same thing.

And what I wouldn't do to get my hands on the Murray Cammick soul collection. Nothing to do with the music (I have much of that) I just want the rekkids!
