  • Hard News: Fixing Auckland, in reply to Stephen Knightly,

My pet topic with regards to waterfront redevelopment: rip down the Red Fences and donate them to MOTAT.

    +1 there
And... While we are on the subject of MOTAT and associated things. Trams have arrived back in Auckland, not from MOTAT as you might have thought but from Melbourne. OK, you might think, MOTAT needs its trams for display and their own Tramway but they do have 25 of the damned things including 3 from Melbourne, 2 of which happen top be newer than the 1920's ones we are leasing, yes, that's right, leasing, we pays our money and never own them. I mean Jeez we could have even borrowed some from Christchurch

Christchurch was hit by a powerful earthquake on 22 February 2011 which caused significant damage to the heritage tram circuit. Services are currently suspended and it is expected that it will be between 6 to 18 months before they can resume.

    But hey, to sensible eh?.

  • Hard News: London's Burning,

It was good to see that the Riots didn't stop the Beach Vollyball, a sport so very close to the hearts of many who lost their homes to make way for the Olympic Stadia.
But not to worry, I'm sure This will keep everybody happy.

  • Hard News: London's Burning,

insurers 'will pay claims then recover money from the police

Britain’s police forces could face a bill for tens of millions of pounds from insurance companies because property was damaged in the rioting while the “police effectively failed to keep law and order”.

Don'cha just love those cuddly little insurance companies?.

  • Hard News: London's Burning, in reply to Russell Brown,

People arrive to Clean up Clapham
But have to go home because the Police wont let them enter the “Crime Scene"…

Residents around Clapham Junction gathered as early as 9am to start cleaning their riot-hit streets.

However they had to wait a long time to get permission from the police and local council.

    Sounds familiar?.

  • Hard News: London's Burning,

I suspect that whatever degree of coordination is present has something to do with the anarchist groups, who have always been fairly organised.

    Yes... Well...
They are known for their top heavy bureaucratic structure... aren't they.

  • Hard News: London's Burning, in reply to Scott Gamble,

Having said that, the politest police I've ever come across by a long way were consistently the London police

In my personal experience there are "Bad Apples" in every Police Force.
British Police, in general seem to have less of those and, again, in general, tend to consider themselves part of the same society as the General Public.
This has not been my experience here. At almost every turn I have found the Police to consider the General Public as their enemy.
Let's hope we have no Copy Cat reaction here, it would be very messy.

Also, the sheer fuckwittedness of Julian Assange’s tweets in the past few hours – demanding to know why the BBC hasn’t “interviewed any of the London protesters” when they did so in Egypt and Syria –

I think his point is more "Well you weren't on the side of the "Authorities" in the Middle East because you didn't share their World View, this is different because...?"

  • Hard News: An open thread while I'm down…,

It was, kind of, Global I was living in New Cross at the time of the Brixton Riot

In January 1981 a house fire, a suspected racially-motivated arson, had killed a number of black youths in New Cross; the police investigation was criticised as inadequate.

It was one of many, at the time.

  • Hard News: Science: it's complicated, in reply to Bart Janssen,

That it also creates things that we all find valuable and useful is remarkable,

Alan Turing probably, found Butterflies aestheticly pleasing.
Not that there is anything wrong with that
But it is interesting in the fact that "Normality" is considered mean (the expected value of a random variable) which is, in fact, what we consider to be normal, scientificiacllyish.
A bit like politics, where the meaning is hidden by the power of X.
