And to bring us from the sublime to the utterly, utterly ridiculous (which is perhaps a metaphor for Michael's life), here is Liza Minnelli singing 'You Are Not Alone' complete with wobbly voice, crazy pointing, and cheesy choir.

(I truly love poor old batshit Liza. When she goes I'm going to cry my eyes out. Cabaret is one of my favourite films ever.)

webweaver, as long as it has a 'www' in it, you can just paste the YouTube url and it will automatically embed.

(I'm pleased people like Rich's writing on fourfour. He also does two of my favourite things on the internet: hilarious America's Next Top Model recaps, and Jezebel's fortnightly feature Pot Psychology, in which he and his friend Tracie get stoned and play agony aunts. He manages to float pretty seamlessly between the trivial and the thoughtful. And his screencapping talents are peerless.)

I literally just remembered watching the 'Beat It' video with my Hollywood-musicals-loving mother in 1983, and her being totally entranced by his dancing. I suppose the whole video is very West Side Story, so that makes sense.

There's a very fun remix of 'I Want You Back' by Konishi Yasuharu of Pizzicato Five at the end of this post.

And he didn't even have cocaine psychosis to blame any more...

Ooof. Bad was really where the rot set in. Still, I've recently come to an appreciation for 'Smooth Criminal'...

So I suspect that we'll remember the talent and come to forget the weirdness. And I feel like the reverse will apply to Phil Spector.

I think I'll probably *try* to remember the weirdness and talent equally for both. I mean, Spector had been threatening people with guns for years, and Jackson's been a walking punchline for over a decade. I think it's actually harder for people to remember the music, which in both cases is objectively great for the first flush of releases...

I was just reminded on Twitter that he broke MTV's colour barrier. (When he was, erm, stil black. :) )

At the risk of repeating myself a million times today: this is a worse story-arc than Elvis'. It's a tragedy in the formal sense of the word, I suppose.

Also, this. Because he was preternaturally talented, a long time ago before it all went so terribly wrong.

They're just awful things. My sympathies.

My husband got kidney stones while we were in Granada. I have no real Spanish, and he obviously couldn't leave the hotel room. I had to mime 'blood in the urine' to a non-English-speaking pharmacist. Luckily he understood, bless him.

  • Southerly: Bubbles Over Blockhouse Bay,

The identical photos are freaking me out!

You have to be fully inducted into their secret society to understand how 'Cecilia' could be shortened to 'Mickey', or 'Robert' could be abbreviated as 'Meggs'.

My family also suffers from this... affliction? Idiosyncrasy? My grandmother's name was Mira, yet she was called Bonnie; my great-aunt's name was Lyla, yet she is called Bet; my great-uncle's name was Nugent, yet everyone called him Boy. My grandfather is Christopher yet has been known as Jack for nigh on 91 years. On the other side, Uncle Rodney is Uncle Joe for no apparent reason. It's a mystery.
