  • Hard News: Out of the Box,

A lot of the coverage in overseas press at this point is just regurgitation of what the main three published yesterday. It's going to take a few days for any real analysis to come out of outlets that aren't affiliated with those that got early access. Hell, they've had the files for several weeks already.

It's interesting that this is all material that's classified between Secret and SBU. Nothing at Top Secret, and probably (I haven't looked, but it's unlikely given the nature of what's been released) nothing that's Sensitive Compartmented Information.
To me, that says that the leaker doesn't have TS clearance, rather than being an indication of any kind of conscience. Ignoring that a leak is a leak, and there's no real way to morally equivocate about leaking S but not TS, the likelihood of accidentally putting at least some TS-classified material into such a massive dump is so high as to make it nearly impossible to avoid. Alternatively the leaker deliberately only grabbed material from SIPRNet despite having a TS clearance, either on the grounds of lessening discovery risk (TS material is protected more closely than S) or of widening the pool of suspects for investigation to tens- if not hundreds-of-thousands of people, rather than a few thousand.

see also flatscreen TVs made from toxic substances

Gotta say, you can't beat the lead content of the humble, old-school, non-flat-screen CRT. Nothing like the need to protect viewers from a ray-tracing photon emitter to bump up the heavy-metal content.

  • Hard News: iPad Impressions,

I just read the methodology. They inserted the questions into the "psychological surveys" they do on Facebook that people choose to take to get their personality type. So the respondents were self-selected.

Yes, there's definitely self-selection, but if the profiling was as part of a general quiz then the bias effect should be fairly well compensated for. Certainly not scientific, but still a far cry from the self-selection of an online poll asking a pre-stated question about a single topic.

It's at the splendid level of insight of the Stuff poll last week in which not desiring to purchase an iPad was simply not an option.

Except that it's based on psychological analysis of a statistically-significant sample, not an online poll. So whether or not the results actually mean anything, you cannot dismiss it as being on the same level as a Stuff poll.

Read the article. It's actually rather amusing, especially in light of it being profiles based on interviewing 20,000 people.

Ah, but it's a wireless keyboard

OK, that's actually not quite so bad. Still a little steep, especially when one can get wireless keyboards for rather less than $100 (and they come with a keypad), but not quite as ridiculous.

And in other Apple news the USPTO has said that jailbreaking is a fair use under the DMCA. So users are no longer breaking the law if they jailbreak their iP* devices in order to install/run apps that aren't blessed by the Holy iJobs.

FWIW, if you need a keyboard for your iPad, the Apple keyboard dock costs $119 and works very well.

    *choke*
For a keyboard! I'm sure it's a very sexy keyboard (I do like Apple hardware. Shame about the company), but it's still just a bloody keyboard that props up your iPad.

    my htc desire
    ...
I got mine from clove.co.uk for about $750ish

PriceSpy has the cheapest Desire from an NZ-based company at $772.50. That's a place that does free shipping, too. Yesterday (and the last 10-or-so days) the cheapest was $850. Considering that two months ago they were much nearer $1,000 than $800, that's not a bad drop.
I'd been looking at a Desire with much lust, waiting for the price to drop to about where it is now, but having just this morning accepted a job offer with a place that'll be giving me a CrackBerry I think the lust will remain unrequited.

PAS is a public interaction space, and yet the interaction uses the same method of interface as if we were to write novels to each other.

You obviously haven't paid too much attention to the length of some of the posts and comments that litter PAS :P

Steve, I'm saying that not only is the accuracy insufficient to the task there's also inadequate power in the iPad (and pretty much anything else that's not a general-purpose computer, including the vast majority of netbooks, nettops, and tablets) to do it even if accuracy was 99.99%
Handing a few words off to a remote server is still a huge step away from transcribing even 30 seconds'-worth of speech.
