  • Hard News: Gushing for Auckland,

But Labour is not "the left" any more than National is "the right", as plenty of Greens and ACT supporters will patiently man-splain to you at great length.

If only you could use the expression "man-splain" more often... it's so non-irritating and uncondescending.

Labour broadly speaking is a party of the Left. So are the Greens, the Alliance, etc. I think they are all entitled to evaluate the candidates who have put their names forward and decide for themselves whether they think they should push for a candidacy of their own, endorse an existing candidate, encourage their supporters to canvas for an independent, and, yes, point out to people who might be thinking of running that it might be strategically stupid and that they shouldn't count on the party's support if they decide to go ahead with it. They're all legitimate options, and it's also a pretty common way for local politics to differ from national politics in a bunch of countries.

  • Hard News: Gushing for Auckland,

Brown is not a sock-puppet. He's a politician of long standing and experience. If elected, I very much doubt he would be taking directives from Labour. So what's your problem exactly with Labour deciding not to run a candidate against him and split the liberal vote?

But if I never have to drink another litre of CT contrast medium it'll be too soon

Bet you never had to go through the whole prep for a colonoscopy only to be told by the hospital that they made a mistake and you didn't need one after all. How we all laughed!

Seems a teeny tad previous, to me.

Yes yes, we live in a post-ideological world. Sure. And Banks doesn't happen to be the former minister of police of a national government, with current backing by councillors of various centre-right party affiliation. And Len Brown is not a liberal leftie. Happy now?

Actually, you're right, it wasn't cocaine - it was ephedrine.

Yes, I thought of the Aristocrats too in relation to the Fane incident (the guy at the roast right after 9/11). Not to mention Ricky Gervais' bit on Nietzsche and Hitler. And it seems the people entitled to take slight at Fane's joke, didn't. So it's all a bit puzzling, really.

Can somebody remind me what befell Holmes after the cheekie darkie on air rant?

In the meantime, it's like all the bullying and slandering is performing a public service. Yeah, I can see the logic there.

He was done for cocaine, whose performance-enhancing properties are extremely dubious.

I'm truly thinking (hoping) he was thinking of something more innocent.

Yes. Yes, I was. Seagulling in amateur football is when you hover by the opposition goalkeeper, behind the defence, hoping to kick stray balls into the net. It's actually sanctionable even in the junior leagues, in spite of the fact that they don't have an offside rule.
