I have to say I am surprised at the Charter Schools initiative. Seems like a solution in search of a problem. Or perhaps, more likely, something that appeals to a very select group of supporters of ACT. Is this something people have been talking about seriously in NZ?
TABOR, well, ACT has been talking about that for years, not that this is much of a consolation.

I do admit to not paying a lot of attention to this, but Banks never really fell out with National's leadership, or did he?

Surely we should be counting John Banks as a National Party MP, in terms of reliability right? Rather than say an MP from another party, with a differing agenda. I don't know the guy, but he did spend an awfully long time as a National MP and old habits die hard for all of us

I don't get how the turnout can be so low, I would have thought during a recession, quake, referendum etc, that people would want to be involved either way

I voted by fax last week from London, which is always fun!
I am really glad to see that MMP is winning, but am rather surprised at the size of the informal vote for the second vote.

I accept that without learning a language or absorbing a new culture, one has a pretty different immigration experience, but either are still pretty real and non trivial.
That being said, moving to London from Wellington was pretty easy and presented little dislocation, which rather surprised me.

I should have been more clear, I should have said "perception" of National's economic management abilities. It is a pretty common trope across the world for right wing parties - which doesn't mean it is true, but it is often believed
