  • Hard News: About Arie, in reply to Russell Brown,

I would be happy to see meaningful restorative justice.

Yes, and Sacha said so too earlier. Would love to see it happen - not holding breath.

Edit: to sound a bit less cynical, I'll add I'm increasingly in favour of 'thinking outside the square' with regard to justice issues - especially if it involves empowering the victim as well as being more constructive overall.

  • Hard News: About Arie, in reply to Idiot Savant,

Any failure to resolve a crime, to identify who is responsible and bring a case against them is, by definition, a failure on their part.

Any failure to resolve a crime? Really? That's a bit naive.

But I suspect the most likely explanation is the most straightforward one.

Maybe so, but in your blog you stated as fact that the police did it. I agree that with what we know it seems most likely, but don't see the benefit in jumping to conclusions at this point.

The idea that she is actually unable to understand why people would read it the way we have seems rather farfetched.

    Rather!

I expect no better from Laws. But the comment from Collins... ffs..

  • Hard News: About Arie, in reply to Russell Brown,

I am a poster who said they should throw the book at looters when this story turned up. Hindsight is a powerful weapon. I wonder how many others thought the same thing as me. I suspect half the bloody country.

Oh, look, me too. It has taken me a while to work this out.

And me. Although all we knew was that there was looting. I didn't know (until reading this post) that one of the people concerned was autistic, or that he'd been assaulted, or that the theft was relatively minor. I don't think many people did, because they read headlines and maybe one or two paragraphs into a story. To be fair, the concern and the anger directed at the looters was based, for many, on feeling protective of the vulnerable. It's just that they didn't perceive that it may not only be the victims of the looting who were vulnerable.

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to Simon Grigg,

It’s worth saying though that TV3 for those of us offshore, has been phenomenal in all this. Every New Zealander I know beyond living beyond the nation’s shores has been sitting glued to one of their various international feeds for hours, mostly ABC.

TV3 is also all over CNN at the moment. CNN are focusing a lot of time on the earthquake and, aside from their own phone interviews and a little analysis, that’s mostly with TV3 coverage.

    Which one? ;)

    Well, it wasn't me.

    Must have been Graeme Edgeler.

  • Up Front: Say When, in reply to Hilary Stace,

And who would have guessed that Chris Trotter would have to be the champion for feminism on a panel about academic women’s studies?

Trotter was as surprised as you are, Hilary.

But could they get anybody with a strong personal commitment to the teaching of Women’s Studies to appear on the show? Not on your Nelly! Sandra Coney and Sue Kedgely, founding mothers of Second Wave Feminism in New Zealand, declined. All the women in academia who were approached were unwilling to put their heads above the ivory parapet. Even the women at New Zealand’s premier feminist blogsite – The Hand Mirror – refused to participate.

Really? Well, if that summary is fair, sounds like they tried.

  • Muse: TV Review: Good Gods Almighty!,

Yeah, or they restrict themselves to "awesome" or "looks lame, LMAO at the FX". But I was a little surprised at the proportion of users commenting on the race issue after only a brief appearance of Elba in the trailer.

  • Muse: TV Review: Good Gods Almighty!, in reply to Martin Lindberg,

there’s been some outrage by the casting of Idris Elba as Heimdall in the upcoming Thor movie.

Quite. And the outrage continues after the release of the latest Thor trailer. Comments included:

A Black man playing a norse God, NO THANKS. I’m not a racist, but none of our gods are black, hence, should not be played by a black man, PERIOD.
