Red dawn yesterday morning, precursor to the few mm of frontal rain around lunchtime as the weather system headed offshore from Gisborne, to build strength as it swung in against the eastern South Islanders today ...
First the wide image, with late autumnal foliage of the walnut tree at right, updating the late summer one from the same spot.

And the tall image, featuring Metasequoia glyptostroboides = 'dawn redwood' in the dawn, with its remnant seed-bearing foliage.

  • Capture: Autumn lite, in reply to Jos,

Impressive, the (white-faced) herons' wingbeats more or less in synch but especially the ragged echo of their silhouettes in the dark cloud perfectly placed above them - magic!

It sure put the wind up old Queen Vic.

Her heavy drapery more than a match for your wind - she looks unflappable. Though to say 'completely unmoved' would be an overstatement, I admit.

Sun and shadow on autumnal walnut leaves and leaflets.

I'll see what I can do to raise the tone - ooh look, some Autumn Light.

A day later, a columnar view from the doorstep – not much has changed.

Those few days ago, there were maximal numbers of yellow leaves on the tree but few had fallen.

And under the tree itself, as weak sun broke through low cloud to disperse the fog. Just upstream, the weeping willow too has its foliage maximally yellow, more concentratedly so.

Home again on the riverbank these last few days - the walnut tree is finally going thoroughly autumnal. This morning as the first real sun broke through after the rain, many leaves have fallen and the foliage is much thinned out.

A newly fallen walnut leaf in the early sun this morning.
The walnut's real autumn fall only just starting now.

So back to the beginning, finishing the job off in the sun this morning, and by lunchtime that last bit is hardly worth the trouble. Again showing against the window through the alder.

    To the hillslope beyond.

Then over the last few days, ripening restarts, this fig fattens and colours up – here yesterday morning through my kitchen window against a window through the alder foliage to the hillslope beyond. A silvereye visited to check it out purposefully, prompting my non-silver-based photographic eye to record a baseline image for the day.

Three hours later it was raining, the silvereyes need fuel.

Really it’s much more convenient and energy-efficient with those leaf-platforms to stand on while feeding.
