  • Hard News: Have you met thingy?,

A poor grasp of spelling and/or grammar ought to be sufficient reason for never voting for some political parties eg down the road from our house is a huge National billboard, promising that they will have "less bureaucrats" working in the health sector. Presumably they mean "fewer'?

Sue Moroney, the Labour candidate for Hamilton East, is suffering some damage to her billboards (the last two letters of her name being cut out or defaced).

  • Hard News: Dial O for Obama,

PS: Also, we can still accommodate punters at tonight's recording of Media7

Russell: do you have a topic for next week as I could add a Media 7 rercording to a book launch in Auckland next Tuesday?

  • Hard News: The joke that went too far,

Been in Adelaide , for an Aust Teachers of Media (ATOM) conference, so I have missed the thread of conversations. Being Friday, anything goes (from hoaxes to grinders), so I was wondering if anyone knows about the EIN news service, which has begun to pop up (unannounced) daily on my email. It actually provides excellent links to major news stories but I have no idea from whence it came.. Any ideas?

  • Hard News: Fun while the banking system collapses,

This would be hilarious if it wasn’t so effing serious.

There is a kind of perverse pleasure, though, in observing the savage irony of all those non-state interventionists and free market zealots now rushing to the Federal Reserve with their hands out..As Gareth Morgan (who I don't often agree with) said on MR today, it all dates back to the 1987 crash, when financial institutions were bailed out too rapidly and never really learnt a lesson. But you do feel for those people who will lose their jobs--it won't be those on the top salaries, obviously.

On more worldly matters: go the Warriors tonight! And maybe even Waikato will prevail over HB.

  • Hard News: The TVNZ 7 Internet Debate,

Excuse the dumb question but what is "peering"? Over the shoulder? Through a window? Surveillance of internet use??

In respect of questions for the TVNZ7 panel, I would like something on where the internet fits with secondary schooling. Should it be an IT responsibility (which is more about finding your way around the computer/Web? Should it be a responsibility of Media Studies (NCEA Levels 2 & 3 + Scholarship), which is more about the politics of technology, evaluation of Web content, moral and ethical issues, the processes of convergence etc?

  • Hard News: The TVNZ 7 Internet Debate,

I agree with you Russell, that having McCroskie, McVicar and all the other Mc's on Kim Hill would be the ruination of the programme. As you pointed, they have ample access to other areas of the media. You can see what has happened with The Panel (Nat Radio weekdays), when it has come to depend on the usual suspects ie pundits who have already too much access to the airwaves eg Michelle Boag, Richard Griffin etc. You know what they are going to say on any given topic; there is little surprise, no lateral thinking, ill-informed opinion stands in for enlightenment.

Karl du F certainly has a big chip on his shoulder about the educated classes!

I will sit and consider what might be a good question for your internet panel

  • Hard News: Now It's On,

But I don't apologise for getting a wee bit pissed off about Geoff making cracks about vandalising hoardings under cover of darkness.

You do protest too much, Craig. It was just wishful thinking. I used to regard the skillful removal of over-sized election billboards as a gesture of public beautification but I don't do it these days--except for an ACT billboard illegally stapled to a fence on our r.o.w. at the last election.

  • Hard News: Now It's On,

f anyone's in the vicinity, could you be a dear and pop down and throttle him for me?

    On my way.

But try not to muss the hair!

  • Hard News: Now It's On,

Seriously, the way those warty assemblages of 2x4 and posterboard spring up like mushrooms scares and offends me every election season.

I was visiting Napier and Hastings last week and the roadside view from Bay View (Airport) to Hastings was dominated by Nat billboards. Oh, for a chainsaw and a dark night....!

  • Hard News: Conscious Party,

Russell--having predicted the election date, do you have any inside gen on who is playing at Big Day Out 2009 (other than Neil Young, possibly)??
