Now, 11 year old girls are a different story altogether, I find. They like it when you don't take any shit, but they are far better at arguing their point of view than little girls. Reason #567 why I am glad to be childless.

I don't know about that one, Giovanni. My methods work, but I'm not sure that you'd approve of all of them!

Giovanni
I do know a babysitter who can cope with any child (and also likes them all). She's otherwise occupied at the moment but may be occasionally available. if you are interested I'll ask her.Pity I'm not in Welly, Giovanni. All my friends' kids used to be silenced with the threat of going to Uncle Ian and Aunty Jackie's house for a wee while. And I'm willing to bet there isn't a rambunctious 3 year old girl alive who can withstand my "look".

I got a good one of my grandmother one year ( no mean feat. I tell you) I thought lovely shot of her in the garden. Instead I got the 90 something coming at me with the spade. I was informed that she believed the spirit is diminished every time a shot of her was stolen. Still, I like the photo, spade an' all.
I'm afraid I'm a ruthless photographer. I give people a choice - let me take the photo of you doing whatever you're doing, or you muck it up with stupid faces, in which case you're the person that looks like a twat in perpetuity, and it's no skin off my nose. Usually works, I find. And I have the opposite problem with the children I teach. They are merciless in their posing, and hamming it up for the camera. They quickly learn, however, that I only do "natural". On the other hand, I'm not very photogenic so I do not like photos taken of me. Which is too bad, really, since there are 90 kids where I work who love taking photos, and somehow the teachers remain their favourite subjects.......

I am so sorry that Mary Emma died, Islander. So sorry.
When my younger sibling Mary Emma died last year, "Halleujah" was *her" song of exit at the crematorium.
This made me cry, as I sang the song to myself in my head. Beautiful song.
We were estranged from a long time back.
We were starting to come to - an understanding- in 2007.
She died in September that year.
I dont know.
I really dont know. That sucks so badly. Cyber hugs to you, my friend.

And re the Sally Lunn debate of the above thread, I checked Aunt Daisy and her Sally Lunns are small sugar topped buns.
Yesterday, after previous discussions on this thread, I felt honour bound to go and find the mystical Sally Lunn. I ventured forth into the local Foodtown. And after my adamance about what a Sally Lunn was and having never heard of a Boston Bun, I am bemused to report that I found a Sally Lunn, and it was called - yes - the thing I had claimed never to have heard of. How bizarre.

And there's this dis-quieting thought at the back of my mind that the courier driver that was shot by the police was shot because he was young, brown and driving a vehicle that the police didn't think someone of that age and race was meant to be driving. Pray it ain't so.
That's fairly outrageous extrapolation of any information about the shooting so far.

if this doesn't melt your heart you don't have one
Just beautiful. Funnily enough, as I was watching the inauguration coverage the other day, I wondered why that song wasn't being played.

There are always lots of reasons to be happy, according to this guy. We had the AKA (Auckland Kindergarten Association for those not in the know) teachers' conference on Wednesday, and had Dr Happy for a couple of hours. Good for him, but it begs the question, why does the phrase Healthy Thinking need that trademark thingy on it? And why do people make money from respinning ancient philosophies ? ie it's not what happens to you in life, it's how you react to it.

We have been accompanied for weeks by a tui who perches on the very tip of one of the pine trees and sings a distinctive song.
I wasn't quite sure where to put this, but this quote from Russell in the original post seems apt. Mahina did, after all, sing a distinctive song.
