  • Hard News: The Letter, in reply to Chris Waugh,

    Buy, hey, priorities, people.

Totally. The snippets read like the biggest white whine I've ever read in my life. Oh the adversity!! Someone recorded what the Chief of Spies was saying in a public meeting!! His mate in that meeting turned out to have dealings with someone he set his goons on, without him ever meaning to! But it made him feel a lot better to sack some competent staff for nothing. Now he has to deal with all the fuss of his crooked staff, and they can't even get it right to slip him gossip to equivocate with. It really does suck to be the most powerful and one of the richest men in NZ.

I hope somebody’s keeping screenshots or printing hard copies

LOL. You know there are still people around who only get printouts? These are the people who pay for the Herald.

It's hard to know which is the better strategy. Press council would probably work, and might work quickly. It's the low risk strategy. But the go-for-broke is to cement their negative campaign on National with actual charges of slander against the PM, who was foolish enough to make these claims outside of parliament.

They seem to be considering action more against Liu.

This can of worms only opens from the inside?

And the $150,000 is now clearly and absolutely wrong. I think a more explicit clarification from the Herald is very much in order now.

I'm pretty sure that a "clarification" that completely contradicts something said earlier is technically called a retraction.

ETA: Although I'd settle for them choosing a sacrificial columnist to get punched in the nose on camera by Cunliffe. Ideally, for the karma of it, that columnist should be Bob Jones.

I’d be feeling bloody ashamed if I was them.

I'd be worried about getting sued.

  • Hard News: The Letter,

So this story has simply vanished from Herald and Stuff today. What happened? Not that I’m interested, but I was expecting it to go on and on (actually I was counting on it to get me past my last exams, safely away from the Internet).

I’m sensing it got shut down, so completely has the sound and fury turned into silence.

On balance of benefit, are they more often right than they’re wrong?

Amazing to think that could even be the rationale. Getting purely numerical one should at least ask "are the consequences of a false positive more severe than a false negative"? One is killing innocent people with high certainty. The other is that someone you want to be killed gets away for now. Even the most brutal human life number cruncher should at least get that the two aren't the same, and that getting it right more often than getting it wrong is way, way less than good enough.

Gotta love Key, he does this automagically:

"From time to time I always try to make sure I am fully briefed on intelligence matters."

ETA: It took Murray Mexted years to perfect comments like that.

Certainly not. But it’s a bit odd that the PM is now saying he only knew what he read in the papers.

Probably a lie. But he's got the memory defense as a well established routine now.
