  • Hard News: Dropping the Bomber, in reply to Steve Parks,

It was clearly hyperbole. (I believe some people who post on PAS sometimes also engage in this.)

And which is a risky defense to run in a defamation suit. I've thought about that quite a lot because (believe it or not) I did self-censor myself quite a bit when doing PAR - and a handful of times I was asked to do an on-the-spot edit on grounds of taste or (once) potential defamation.

I was also part of a panel discussion on Chris Laidlaw's show a while back, and probably for the first time ever Russell said I was pretty good but needed to be more pushy and assertive. I was actually terrified that I'd say something OTT that I just couldn't take back or qualify on live-with-a-seven-second-delay radio; things you can do better around here.

  • Hard News: Where are the foreigners?!,

Whatever the cause, it’s now evident that Rugby World Cup 2011 is not delivering the anticipated hospitality bonanza – or at least delivering it very unevenly.

Could you explain to me why the frak anyone should ever set foot in a cafe that charged eight bucks for a mediocre latte or that shitty place in Winyard Quarter we went to?

Takapuna is busy, busy, busy – so I suspect that it may be just the CBD and environs that’s suffering.

Yup, and I'm certainly talking up the Latin Larder on Hurstmere Road after a damn near perfect brunch on Saturday - most certainly enhanced by the delightful ambiance provided by a party of French rugby fans.

  • Hard News: Dropping the Bomber, in reply to Russell Brown,

Of course it isn’t as blatant as that. I’d be surprised to find a smoking gun email setting out terms. But there’s a general consideration that in return for Mediaworks running radio stations that promote a right-wing agenda, they’ll get favourable treatment on things like license fees.

That’ll be why they aired Public Address Radio for five years, then.

And why even the token right-y on Public Address Radio could say rather disobliging things about Mr. Key and his Government without a midnight visit from Darth Joyce's stormtroopers.

  • Hard News: Dropping the Bomber, in reply to Russell Brown,

Instead, John Howson has now said (according to a Standard commenter who called him on the phone) that he was dropped because the rant was defamatory and the Prime Minister might be taking action. Which does rather suggest Radio NZ got a complaint from the PM’s office.

It might also suggest that RNZ management are really hyper-sensitive and risk adverse when it comes to buying shit fights with politicians in election year. And not entirely without reason, I’d suggest – how many times did Sean Plunkett get suspended or forced to issue an on-air apology to various pols after *cough* rather robust interviews?

  • Hard News: Dropping the Bomber,

And, as Gordon Campbell points out, commentators from the other side of the political divide, most notably Matthew Hooton, have been pretty nasty at times too.

Um, you’re right – but I’d also note that Lila Harre wasn’t disciplined when, during the Pledgecardgate crazy, she accused the Auditor-General (who happens to be an officer of Parliament) of “conspiring with the Opposition to bring down the Government”. Chris Trotter has also gotten a pretty clear field to accuse critics of Winston Peters of “media gang rape” and lynching the uppity darkie.

There’s nothing close to defamatory about the “meth addict” comment – Bradbury merely compared Key to one, not implied that he was one.

You know, 3410, that's not a pinhead dance I'd really want to bust out in a defamation suit. If I merely compared Bomber to a child molester - but didn't actually, like, you know say he ran around dicking kiddies - I wouldn't expect him to have much of a sense of humour about it.

  • Hard News: The Politics of Absence, in reply to Sacha,

    Says exactly the opposite, indeed.

I totally believe ratings agencies have no opinion whatsoever on the possible impact of the announced policies of opposition parties, and have no problems with being dragged into electoral politics. In other news: I've been lying about being gay and am a total vag-a-holic.

Just for the record, I didn't hack Russell's account or force him to type that while holding a shotgun to Colin's adorable wee head. :)

like Hooten, you mean? Or Boag, perhaps. Farrar?

As Colin Peacock said, if you're going to have on partisan commentators who aren't exactly known for their sober understatement, what the hell do you expect? I think my opinions of Witi Ihimaera are well on the record, and if I was invited to discuss his *cough* somewhat odd interview in last week's Listener (promoting his new novel) you bet your arse I'd be making some extremely strong statements about his literary judgement and character.

Personally, I'd be more shocked if Key ever did anything that wasn't Satanically malignant in Bradbury's estimation.

  • Hard News: The Politics of Absence, in reply to 3410,

that “Bomber” Bradbury has been fired from Afternoons with Jim Mora for “an unacceptable breach of RNZ’s editorial policies”, specifically that “RNZ hadn’t been advised that he’d be airing such strong personal criticism of the prime minister’s character”.

All I've got is: "Don't you love it when people are shocked by the entirely predictable outcomes of a course of action?" In the end, if you're going to have a rhetorical carpet bomber on your show, you really shouldn't be surprised when the building ends up on fire.

He certainly was the biatch of the week. “Geez girlfrien’ sometimes you gotta swallow.” I think he likes being on top., and I had such high hopes.

To be slightly more generous, Sofie, a little known side effect of collective Cabinet/caucus responsibility is heightened risk of scar tissue from biting your tongue and lower lip. Something, I suspect, Clark had a severe case of in the 80's -- and which I'm well familiar with from experience at a much lower pay grade.
