Dude, just tell us what the process actually is.

Yeah, are you saying that the process is secret, but it's ok because you've shared it with the Electoral Commission and they're happy that you're happy? And that it meets s.71 and the poor old electorate have no reason to know any more...

I can't see how anyone would doubt that they have an open and transparent process that involves the members of the party in selecting candidates. Why, they're so open that they even involve members of ACT in their candidate selections.

I think Keith Allen would have made an excellent MP for Tauranga:

Wasn’t a former ACT MP jailed for stealing money from an education charity she’d started?

Mana isn't (just) a Maori party - neither Sue Bradford or John Minto are Maori AFAIK.

I don't have the arithmetic to work it out

The electoral commission does (see screenshot)

For instance: Greens 28%, Labour 20%, Mana 2% giving 63/121 seats to Grn/Lab/Mana.

With Hone entrenched as an MP and time to organise, I think Mana will pick up more votes in future elections. Maybe not many, but a few,

I also believe that until there is a major economic crash, which will most likely happen sometime in the next 10 years, NZ will keep sleep-voting for right-wing governments. The scenario I'm looking at above is *after* we get the $5 a litre petrol, banks closed for multiple weeks, power cuts and food queues.

I don’t think the Greens are anywhere near ready to [be] part of any Govt (sic)

Well, they got a 50% vote increase so more and more people think they are. And they are one party that is actually about issues not personalities.

I stick to my view that the next left-wing government in NZ will be Green led with Labour as a support partner. Even if not, with 10%+ of the house, any Labour government will either have to accept the Greens (and quite likely Mana) as a partner or be in opposition for ever.

  • Legal Beagle: Election '11 -…,

I feel Banks and Dunne just gave a convincing argument for thresholds, and even for the abolition of electorates.

21000 / 12000 votes respectively, and they get made Ministers. I wonder if Tau Henare and Maurice Williamson might feel that starting their own micro-parties (again in the first case) might give them a better chance of getting their asses into a ministerial limo.

international “clean green” brand worth billions

I lived for many years in a customer country. The concept that I should buy NZ product because it was "100% clean and green" didn't impinge on my consciousness. (Nor did the contra-idea that I should avoid such product because NZ was being (earlier) turned into a Think Big petrochemical powerhouse).

making a national and believable green brand might actually work... they hadn't funded it enough yet

Not being a neolib or anything, but I don't believe it's in the gift of government to build "a national brand".

What they should be doing is ensuring we have a decent environment because its a Good Thing, and ensuring that we have a sustainable economy because it's a Good Thing *and* it will enable us to survive the onset of resource exhaustion and climate change.
