The maps are available at http://www.gw.govt.nz/Earthquake-hazard-maps/ if anyone's curious

My house looks like it straddles the line between a reassuring blue 'low risk' area and a bright red 'high risk' zone.

If I read the Wellington earthquake maps correctly some years ago, Te Papa is built on the area at highest risk for liquefaction. (And tsunami. And shaking. But it's got super-shock-absorbers. So it will lie intact under the sand and the sea.)

    I heard it floats.

Rawdon Christie who fronted the rolling coverage like a pro

He did do well - he must've been on the air for close to eight hours.

Watkins has written a separate story about the same issue and published it in her paper this morning. I guess continuing her pointless feud with one of the PMs staffers is way more important than actually reporting on the earthquake.

According to Bomber over at Tumeke, Key has categorically ruled out any government/EQC money for uninsured households in Christchurch.
Assuming he is correct, was that a "carefully spelled out" position from the PM or an off the cuff response to a media question?
Because 10,000 households appear to have been thrown to the wolves with absolutely zero assistance and zero mention...

Key's indicated that there will probably be some limited assistance - I imagine it will be emergency welfare payments. I guess they'll hammer it out in cabinet today. It's not as if people have been thrown to the wolves - they had the option of buying insurance and chose to take the risk not to do so.

Give JK some slack, it was the weekend and Hawaii to Christchurch is a bit of trek even by private jet.

Yeah, there's been a lot of this sort of thing on The Standard as well, and Whaleoil is trying to blame the earthquake on Jim Anderton. I hope you're all amusing yourselves.

The HoS coverage was farcical, but not surprising. Milne's Twitter response about 'unreported looting' seems as farcical, all the reports I have seen from police are that crime is lower than normal levels.

    Via Scoop:

It has been reported by the Christchurch police that there was one incidence of looting following yesterday’s earthquake. The looting occurred in the Christchurch CBD early yesterday morning and involved two men attempting to smash a shop window. According to Police, the two men were caught in the act and arrested and that since then there have been no other incidences of looting.

The RDGS turns risky financial investments into a one-way bet.

It'd be interesting to know what advice the government has recieved from Treasury regarding the RDGS, and SCFs eligibilty for it. I suspect they've been too busy urging the government to sell KiwiBank to pay it much attention.

This debacle also shows what a dumb idea it was to extend the RDGS to finance companies. It is one thing to protect customers, who are innocent third parties. It is quite another to protect investors.

The idea was to prevent a run on the Finance Companies, followed by a tidal wave of collapses and then foreclosures and forced sales across the country as they all went under at once. So it worked pretty well in that respect.

You have to have assets or be an investor to be affected by the collapse of the finance firms.

Do you think ONLY asset holders or investors were affected by the collapse of Lehman Brothers in September of 2008?

Eh, even if Muldoon hadn't scrapped compulsory super, either Douglas or Richardson would have cashed it all in. When you have crappy Finance Ministers for over twenty years it's hard to have nice things.
