  • Speaker: KICK IT! End of Act One,

They should impose hefty post-match fines on those whom the video evidence shows to be conclusively diving/acting.

They do. But I refer you to the De Rossi pirouettes in the link above - is that sanctionable? I don't think so. Proving complete lack of contact is very hard, and the images don't tell you the force of whatever contact there might have been.

(Another issue is the Mexico penalty today: the guy did dive, but it was still a foul. Jumping over a guy who is tackling you is quite acceptable, since avoiding contact means to avoid or lessen the potential injury. You've still been impeded though.)

Yes, it seems that cycling without a helmet increases your chances of becoming a very healthy corpse. So wear one. Seeing as you're circulating on the road, it's not just your business. If I'm driving (which I don't) and you split your skull on my windscreen, that's not going to improve my life either. And if the reason really is fear of bad hair (as opposed to inflating the perception of the dangers of cycling), then it's because you've made your choice.

(I'm not going to make jokes about that choice either, I take hair very seriously. I keep mine in a special box.)

Who enjoys the part of football where players are rewarded for diving and feigning fatal injury, and then both sides yell at the referee with looks of disbelief? What reason is there for it not being stomped on?

The whole simulation thing is notoriously difficult to adjudicate. If I may be allowed to link to a rival world cup blog, I took an, er, alternative cultural route earlier in the week. At any rate, it's quite rare to be able to rule conclusively that somebody took a dive, even with the technology, so the occasional heavy penalties are a bit too hit and miss to be effective.

I think the sport could use an approach towards referees similar to the one taken in cricket, and that would be easier to enforce. But culturally it would be a major change and there just isn't enough will to get it done.

"Sorry I'm standing in the way of your minimalist Bauhaus-esque fascist snoozefest." Awesome.

Also: "I'm gonna go get hammered with Papyrus." Doubly awesome.

For the benefit of those of us who hear about a crazy and terrible blog post and then just to go and find it for ourselves, I assume the post in question is A Rapist's View of the World: Joss Whedon and Firefly.

Well, thank you, that was... diverse. I loved this from the author in the comments:

"The feminist community is not one that I consider to be feminist. I moved to wordpress because that is where the radical feminists are."

Along similar lines, I try to use sans-serif fonts because that's what real socialists use.

He's been pretty good value in practice demonstrating how it's not at all hard to score free kicks from just outside the box with the official championship ball.

Giovanni - what is your faith in Mexico and Uruguay based on?

I liked Mexico against South Africa. They were very good against Italy in their warm up match and *very* solid against France today. They can bring Blanco in with twenty minutes to go. I like them a lot. Uruguay impressed me a little less but they disposed of SA with ease, looked poised against France. Argentina is vulnerable in defence and could struggle against either - although they'd go in as favourites for sure.

Maradonna might have the manner of a demented goblin, but how good have Argentina been?

They haven't impressed me half as much as their scorelines. They had a couple of hairy moments today playing a team that seemed designed to make them look good. Against Nigeria they were average I thought.

  • Speaker: KICK IT! End of Act One,

Not entirely certain if predictions of a tepid 0-0 draw btwn Mexico and Uruguay will come to pass. While that would ensure both would go thru they also know that the 2nd place team from their group will then play Argentina

I think Mexico ought to play to win. Unless you rate South Africa a chance - but with their goal difference, it's hard to see how they could pull it off - then they really have nothing to lose: if they lose their game and France win or draw theirs, they still advance, they probably would even if France loses. Uruguay tops the group with a draw, so they might play a little more conservatively.

My guess is they'll keep an ear on the other game. If France scores, then Mexico can just unleash. Not having to face Argentina is a big prize. (Incidentally, I think both Mexico and Uruguay could beat Argentina.)
