  • Hard News: Grateful for 'Rain',

Forget all the weeds and tacky architecture, didn’t anyone notice from the Herald on Sunday story that Key's bach is on a road called 'Success Court'? Isn’t that an example of 'nuff said'?

Interesting - that's actually the less wanky part of Omaha, in a sub-division that's been there since I was a kid (my parents have a bach there.) It's when you get to the new sub-divisions down the south end that have names like "The Sands" and "The Dunes" that you're really into "rich prick" territory. Incidentally, all of the roads around there sound like they were named by someone's mother-in-law....

  • Hard News: About a Cat,

I just got back from a two-and-a-half week holiday, and my cat has gone all insane and needy. He'll run into the house and start wailing as though he hasn't been fed in a month until I alert him to my location (usually by shouting "quiet, you!") at which time he'll run over to me and start desperately whoring for attention.

Honestly, if he were Glenn Close, I'd be terrified.

  • Hard News: The Clamour to Cringe,

And yet last week we saw the report that NZ reading skill takes a drop. Of course, if you read the article, it shows that our reading level has risen very slightly, and that it's our international ranking that has dropped.

  • Hard News: The Soap Opera,

Kent Brockman: So when you realized Christmas was ruined, how did you feel?
Marge: How do you think I felt?
Kent Brockman: Absolutely devastated? [turns to camera] "Absolutely devastated," the words of a heartbroken mother.

  • Southerly: In Praise of Arthur,

I've always been one for low maintenance hair. For a long time I had long hair, where styling meant tying it into a ponytail and getting my hair cut happened maybe three times a year. Eventually a combination of regular physical exercise and warm summers were enough to motivate me to lose it (there's only so much sweat-soaked hair a man can take) so I moved to low maintenance option number two -- shave it all off.

Now I just give myself the once over with clippers every week or two. Is being your own barber like being your own lawyer -- a fool for a client and all that? Works for me, but I am horribly, horribly lazy when it comes to hair.

We've armed the robots? Is it too late to shutdown Skynet?

It's worse than that - they've called them SWORDs. Hasn't anyone seen Screamers?

But in favour of motorway pile-ups?

  • Radiation: Back to the 80s,

the only thing that surprised me was that they crammed the whole saga into a single episode

Well, yeah - I could've bought it if it had developed more gradually, but going from blissfully engaged to the love of his life to screaming at her that she's a dirty slut and refusing to listen to her while she cries and pleads with him to hear her out in the space of a single episode... I can only assume the writers were suddenly in a rush to free up Claire Chitham for whatever she's doing next.

  • Radiation: Back to the 80s,

Yeah, bummer about Aurora - I just wish they could have engineered it without having Van's character go from A Bit Thick to Delusional Paranoid Lunatic in the space of ten minutes. Seriously, is he actually meant to be mentally handicapped or is he just dumb? For the first time in OF, I found myself annoyed at the writing.
