  • Field Theory: Cancellation Notice,

you would think that the CCC was the business-as-usual activity and the RWC would be some kind of "exception" funding, but apparently we're all so swept up in seeing minnows playing at the cake tin that we we should all just STFU.

you can't even argue "it brings $$ into the city". have you seen the streets during the carnival? the people who aren't nude have pockets stuffed with money.

South Africa v Wales; South Africa v Fiji; Australia v USA; France v Tonga; New Zealand v Canada; and two quarter finals. It starts September 11 and goes until October 9. So not all minnows and especially not minnows in the "come and stay and spend money" stakes and Wellington will probably be visited by the folks travelling to Palmy and New Plymouth too. The Carnival is asking for roughly the same amount of money for a single weekend.

Craig is right, we need to ask what public money is being spent on. We're getting an awful statue for $350k and a "village" for $100k. Or we are paying $500k for something at the carnival that isn't specified (so far).

It also seems a very odd story that it was $500,000 or nothing.

Che, where are you getting the three Cs from? (CCC) It's bugging me.

  • Field Theory: Cancellation Notice,

In mind it is too soon to cast this as carnival vs anything without more information about how much money is going elsewhere.

And what the extra $300,000 was for. I think it can be presented as Event A and Event B. Event A has $450k against it and Event B has $200k against it (as far as we know). And go from there.

I for one would like to have the pastry vs. dolphins argument. It's long overdue.

What would be the porpoise of that? (Thank you, I'll be here all week)

  • Field Theory: Cancellation Notice,

So, $350,000 for an artwork celebrating sport? It is about art v sport. But it's not art or sport that started the argument, is it, publicly elected officials?

But with no extra information, when was the Carnival bid for extra money put in? It would be unusual to think that the Council wouldn't be spending large sums of money on the World Cup, so to ask for an extra $300k in that same year might have been excessive.

  • Cracker: That's Not My Name,

Also, as I've mentioned here before but now can't remember where I read it, 'ginga-baiting' has its roots in actual discrimination against the Irish.

Possibly from me, though I now think that may be false.

In recent years I have taken to positive discrimination. If for example someone uses the terms "ginga" in front of me I will either call them something like: "fat goatee-wearing cunt face". Or if I'm not drunk, I'll politely point out the anagram of ginga (hint: it starts with 'n').

True story: I was at a lunch where I overheard the following: "I can't tell albinos and gingas apart" "You know what's really funny? Maori gingas".

    We left after that.

  • Radiation: Geek, annoyed,

Waaay back in S1 the Lost writers claimed they could end the show in one episode if it was ever cancelled. I think the problem was that they never updated that ending as the story evolved.

So instead of bringing in all the cool Faraday science and the Desmond consciousness transferal and junk they just went with the ending the had kept for all these years.

Meanwhile the whole finale was teasing me with the fact that my theory could be correct: super-intelligent dogs! I posited that the dog was running the whole damn thing, especially because his appearance usually meant shit was about to go down.

  • Field Theory: It's just like the droids…,

probably more the ability to live-stream it?

Given the iPad has no camera, probably not. You also aren't allowed video cameras, but how many videos have we seen on YouTube from Yankee Stadium?

    For "droids" read "negroes"

Wow, I hadn't thought of that. And they were kidnapped and sold as slaves to the Skywalkers...

It looks like the kind of place that would have a two-drink minimum and if you ain't buyin' you ain't stayin'

For that band there was probably a $10 cover charge. In the new digital version you can freeze frame and see a small stamp on Luke's wrist.

I hope you realise that by mentioning Lost in the title of your post meant I didn't read it.

  • Field Theory: "The complexities of the issues",

they say that no apology can be better than half an apology,
    Sorry?

I suppose that would be like "dig up, stupid"

  • Field Theory: "The complexities of the issues",

A high-value apology should be directed at the people actually affected not a meaningless abstract collective noun.

True, and an apology from Key (while he's already making some) wouldn't go amiss.

But really the only way to truly settle this is a game of rugby. South Africa vs New Zealand Maori, either as a one-off here or as a tour over there.

The juxtaposition of these two apologies (Key and NZRU's) is quite nice I thought
