  • Legal Beagle: Election Fact Check #3: It…, in reply to Chris Waugh,

Incidentally, are the Greens running London-based list candidates this year as they have done previously?

91%, but only 73% in the 18-24 bracket.

I'm sure one could have a checkbox on tax and driver forms as to whether one wanted to be on the published roll.

In terms of preventing fraud, at the moment we rely on the idea that one has to re-register each year (?) at home and then vote at a local polling booth, where they tick you off a manual list. That could be replaced by a system where you go to any polling booth, show id and get checked off a national computer register and given a ballot paper.

(I don't advocate fully electronic voting because of the scope for abuse, but semi-electronic voting would seem sensible).

The Electoral Commission use postal changes of address and the like to track peoples changes of status and invite them to register. My suggestion is to go a stage further and if the records indicate that someone is eligible to vote, then register them automatically.

I wonder why we don't have a motor-voter type system, which would be straightforward with current information systems.

Driving license applications and renewals could be cross checked against immigration / citizenship databases (which they are already to some extent, in that a passport/birth/citizenship certificate is required for initial ID). The same could be done with passports, tax file numbers and benefit/student loan applications, for those that don't drive.

Then a very large percentage of the country would get registered and one would just have to show ID in order to vote.

  • Hard News: Winning the RWC: it's complicated,

It's watched by over 4 billion cumulative people, plus all the space aliens who might catch the match in upwards of 4 years time as the signal reaches Alpha Centauri.

(The fact that 1.4billion people don't have electricity and quite a few others will be at work doesn't seem to affect this. I can imagine Burkinabè peasants will be getting up around now to walk into Ouagadougou to catch the game start at 9am).

Apparently we could host the Olympics. I'm sure there will be those advocating we should, 'even if we have to eat grass' to do so.

Inviting them all to stick around for a week costs a million dollars

Yes, but if any of them wanted to stay, they're all well paid professionals and could afford hotel rooms, camper vans and the like out of their own money.

Is there a tradition that if you're in a team that gets knocked out of a sporting tournament, you get the next plane out and don't hang around?

(It didn't apply way back in the 87 America's Cup, where some of the losing Brits helped with the pioneering TV graphics coverage that I was involved with. Some of the others got jobs with the other syndicates - they weren't allowed to race but could do any kind of support job. More fun than the Solent in january).

  • Hard News: Thinking Digital, in reply to Matthew Poole,

    Depends on your use case.

You have a file X and a one-time pad Y. You need X+Y to extract the information, so a laptop *and* a mobile phone.

Or Bill gives Loretta the pad, Bill travels to a distant place and later Bill sends Loretta a secure message over an insecure (but fast) medium.

losing teams were not even invited to stay on for a few days

Surely they got three to six month visas like everyone else who visits NZ? The [European tournament sponsored by redacted multinational] cup doesn't start till November.
