  • Hard News: Ten Times Warmer,

Not only did the Petreaus report reset the clock so Bush can have a large troop presence in Iraq until the end of his term

One assumes you are taking the proverbial...outside the hard right, who needed something, nobody bit. Being generous James, it was twaddle, made up, manipulated tosh..and pretty much universally derided both by those in the know (including a bunch of other US agencies) and the massed public. It simply made Bush look sillier and more desperate than he already appeared, if such was possible.

  • Hard News: Ten Times Warmer,

Whosoever Stratfor are, he/they/it sound ignorant.

A right wing analyst in, I think Texas, who has quite a reputation for, uhhh, getting it wrong. They make all sorts of predictions which rarely come to pass, and make all sorts of claims to inside information which they clearly do not have access to.

  • Hard News: Ten Times Warmer,

But it comes back to the point. He gave it away because it was worth more to him than selling it.

But a hell of a loss leader, you must admit. The thing about Prince is that he's managed to increase his live take year in and year out since the low points of the mid 90s, and, and I guess this is important to him, he has absolute control over his career and, now, his catalogue.

The Radiohead album will, after the 40 quid thing, then turn up a month later as a normal album..thus driving a third sale...you can bet on it. And they'll do a one album CD only deal with EMI or the likes.

    love that newish Fabric mix

  • Hard News: Ten Times Warmer,

Doesn't giving it away signify that you couldn't actually sell many copies? It may be a smart move but only for someone that no longer has the market power they once had. Is everyone really talking about Radiohead's giveaway - yes I know I am but only about the concept rather than as a fan 'gee whiz this is great'.

Radiohead sell large quantities..they're one of those acts that sit above any rational market forces..their fanbase are fanatical and obsessive. I don't think this is about a collapsing market, it's about knowing they can do this and using their muscle to maximum advantage. I wonder how many hits their domain had today, compared with ten days ago. This is about the currency of the brand.

But I'm sure if he could have sold his latest he would have (though I did read he got money for each one given away as they counted as sales).

He got paid a huge wack by the Mirror for this, far more than he probably got for in royalties for UK sales of an album since the late 80s; he got his album into over a million homes; on the back of this, and all the other scams (giving his last album away in the US with a concert ticket so that it charted at number one, before the rules changed to prevent that) he's one of the highest grossing live acts in the world, and the UK giveaway just happened to coincide with the UK sellout tour and massive coverage and intense (bankable) airplay.

Something is up with his back catalogue too..Warners have deleted it all...I think it's all reverted to the purple one.

  • Hard News: Ten Times Warmer,

and how about radiohead releasing their new album for free? i don't know if that's a very smart business model.

    on the contrary..uber smart.
    a) they are giving away only the first part of it
    b)Radiohead fans are fanatical
    c)everybody is talking about it
    d) the CD package (for 40 quid!) comes out in a month and a 3/4..big flash package and will, with the month and 3/4 buzz, fly into the hands of said fanatics
    e) you can order and pay for it now and it will be couriered to you anywhere in the world in December...imagine the anticipation, and you have all that time to convince yourself you need it
    f) 80% of all sales are still on CD (and with Radiohead a big bunch are on vinyl too...fans need all formats)
    g) like Prince's thing in July, this simply increases their currency as "Radiohead" (tm)
    h) they may or may not give terrestrial rights to a record company but that is all they will do (the smart artists are giving the labels less rights, not the more they want) and Radiohead are using their muscle to do what they want.
    i) LCD rock...the Carl Craig mix of Sound Of Silver I managed to get off AmazonMP3 before the drawbridge went up is hell good, and Losing My Edge has one of the decade's best lyrics...

And my problem aggravated by the fact that when I see something I want, I'll buy the vinyl before the CD

  • Hard News: Connecting the Box,

What have y'all done? Sold 'em and saved the space? Storage in an airtight warehouse? Frisbees? Hours of home-made cd-making?

about 15,000 of the bloody things (70% 12 singes, 30% albums) in a storage space in Auckland city...its a bind, and a millstone, but getting ridding of them is not really something I want to contemplate.

Because Blam Blam Blam really are a very promising outfit.

    yep, I thought so......

You always were ahead of the pack, Simon ...

but all silliness aside, it always pleases me just how good the Blams sound every time I hear them. They played a private gig a couple of years back that I spoke at, and, despite the huge gaps not playing together, they were probably tighter than they'd ever been back whenever.

The other thing that always always hits me with The Blams, is what an incredible songwriter, musician and singer Mark Bell is....The Last Post is one of the killer Luxury Length tracks, and it's a shame he's often overlooked in the rush to (correctly) praise Don's talents.
