As I understand it, that limitation has two grounds: causing actual harm to someone (i.e. incitement to riot) and causing offence.

We have have been introduced, right? :)

There is no fundamental inalienable human right not to be offended and I'd be the first to tell anyone who says otherwise to keep taking the "harden the fuck up" pills. Yes, it does offend me when people like Michelle Bachmann equate gays to child molesters and bestiality. Not because it makes me cry but because it's a flat out lie in the service of a political agenda to strip GLBT of civil and political freedoms. It's also a lie used to justify very real harm to real people -- up to and including murder.

  • Muse: WHORISH SELF-PROMOTION VS.…, in reply to Kumara Republic,

Good to hear at least one old-media company sees digital as an opportunity, and not a threat.

Quite - and since Orion acquired Gollancz, and the eye-wateringly impressive science fiction/fantasy backlist its collected over fifty years, I'm amazed it's taken this long to get something like SF Gateway on the road. As alluded to the press release, their SF and Fantasy Masterworks series have been successful. Faber & Faber have also been monetizing their backlistt with their Faber Finds imprint :)

Let me know when you’re dumping books – I can take them h̶o̶m̶e̶ to the tip for you.

Back off, bitch. I've thrown more elbows at charity book fairs, church fetes and remainder sales than you've had hot dinners. :)

Who wouldn't be? Blue Smoke isn't only a damn good read, but a model of how to write and organise a scholarly but unpretentious work of cultural history with a hell of a lot of research lightly worn. Harder than it looks.

Te Ururoa Flavell – I challenge you: come stand up on any Kai Tahu marae that I have speaking rights on, and spout your tikokorerotiko to my face. You – are a nithing. You lack insight and compassion and your foul dessicating words only add pain to an extremely painful situation. Haere ki Te Po.

Oh, just this. I'd also like to ask Flavell if he's ever been to a tangi/funeral/memorial service for someone who took their own life. In my experience, the "glorification" of suicide is so far from the storm of emotion I've know - sorrow, the survivor guilt, gratitude for the good times, a desperate gnawing awareness of things unsaid and undone and potential gone forever -- I almost literally feel like he coming from another planet.

Whenever the issue of pseudonymity comes up, I remind myself that I am privileged to be able to use my real name online.

You know something, that's all very nice - but I think it's also time to cash a reality check. I have no problems with people using (consistent) pseudonyms when they have legitimate safety concerns. I'd also suggest, with no respect whatsoever, that when Prentice and Farrar use rape complainants as troll bait I don't give a buggery fuck about the delicate sensibilities of their precious commentators. A little old-fashioned naming and shaming wouldn't go amiss.

I use my real name because I think there's something in the old saw that if you won't spit in someone's face you shouldn't piss on their back. I can be nasty - and God, have I ever gotten the wrong end of the stick and worked it like a stripper pole more often than I care to admit. But I'll own what I say on-line, just as I don't shove anonymous letters through letterboxes in the middle of the night. Always.

  • Hard News: How much speech does it take?, in reply to Russell Brown,

I am minded to recall that I was once – for some reason – browsing the forums at Trade Me, and was surprised to see one denizen warn another that I was an “extreme Marxist” and should not be listened to.

Frankly, calling me a Marxist is an insult to … well, Giovanni for a start.

Oh, and apparently I'm a fellow traveller. When Public Address Radio started, I had the rather preculiar experience of having to explain how being self-employed in a free market worked to self-proclaimed righties. I guess they'd have preferred me being ideologically pure dole scum. :)
