You're Nelson way, though, aren't you? Expect the local musical soup to be a bit different than Southland, say.

It's near Nelson. A logging and farming town. :)

Shudder. Caught a few minutes of Mannequin on telly the other night and it reinforced again how utterly crap most commercial 80s music was. I'm sure there are some who find the genre just wonderful. So long as they keep it well away from me..

I know. We live in the rural South Island so shouldn't be too surprised. Bit sad though. Most of his friends find his (and my) music very weird. The again, not many of their dads would be banging out RZA or Madlib on a Sunday afternoon.

Kids liking the same music as their parents. That's just..... wrong, no?

Well, that was my point. He's busy listening to cheesy dance mixes, d&b and dubstep and totally has his own tastes which I've never tried to influence, he could like Bieber for all I care. But several times he's accidentally heard the original stuff that's being sampled in his tunes playing out of my decks. And he's curious about it, no bad thing I reckon.

What is depressing is that most of his friends seem to like '80s power ballads (Bon Jovi, Poison etc...) and ACDC. WTF is up with that?

I should also say I find my kids discovery of music interesting, just to see where they go with it. Our place is awash with music but I've never consciously tried to push anything on them so it's interesting to see them evolve their own tastes.

Several times now the older boy has come to me and asked what I'm playing because he has it sampled into something like a UKF mix or Ministry of Sound compilation. Tunes like 'Hiphop' by Dead Prez or 'Chase the devil" by Max Romeo are commonly sampled on pretty average dance music but I then find him grabbing the originals for his own iPod. Makes me happy.

Also no clear picture on the open-ness of the built network if Telecom gets the nod. They have to build an open network to fulfill their obligations to the govt but this, potentially only applies to the fibre build with UFB funding leaving the status of existing Telecom infrastructure unclear.

And finally, where does it leave all those local providers such as the lines companies that have invested heavily for the last decade into extending fibre in the regions? They would appear to have been sold out by the CFH despite being the type of cooperative, locally supported, interconnected solution that the government was touting up to about 12 months ago.

We all had such high hopes back then...

Indeed. That happened about the time of the 1995 RWC. A group uf us departed and set up our own little list, which continues to this day.

If said list was interested in a new member...
