  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus, in reply to 3410,

Forgot that I updated the stupid Firefox, which now doesn’t show full address. :)

Oh interesting. Chrome doesn't show the protocol string either, but when you copy+paste from the title bar, it magically appears.

  • Hard News: Merry Christmas, Blossoms,

I've never been one for saying, as people seem to now, "happy holidays".

It doesn't really work in a country where "holiday" is just a synonym for "vacation". Merry Christmas! Put the Ēostre back in Easter!

    Ah, percussive maintenance.

At one point I had a computer, a VCR and a car which all required this in order to reach peak performance. But on balance, I wouldn't call that munting, because the effect was more... subtle. What can I say. It's a subtle word, with many shades of meaning.

  • Hard News: Word of the Year 2011 -- The Vote!, in reply to Sacha,

    quite an achievement :)

Ok, but we have a non-zero sample of people who have achieved it now, right? So is it time to stop with the eye-rolling yet?

FWIW, I've always associated "munted" more with the act that produced the breakage - "to munt" being something like the application of excessive force, with insufficient precision. The corollary being that I've always thought it quite possible to fix something by, eg., munting it back into place, if nothing else seems to work.

  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus, in reply to Rich of Observationz,

Now, there's a new less-affluent middle class in existence. This group might have middle class parents, might have a degree and might have a non-manual job. What they don't have is any appreciable net capital or any prospect of making any. They've got all the financial troubles of the working class but not the cultural underpinnings.

    And I didn't think we'd met...

This is an inevitable part of capitalist industrialisation, right? There's less and less manual work to do, more and more people with the education to do non-manual work, but the bulk of the capital still accrues to the owners of stuff.

    3. Argue positively and in good faith. i.e.: don’t write something purely to wind up someone else. (nb: unless it’s some wing nut blog and you’re bored)

Can we call this Brown's Law (by analogy with Wheaton's Law)? "Don't be a dick, but it's OK to pretend to be one on TrueBlueNZ"

I’m quite surprised by that. I mean, when Bob Parker uses it …

See, there's someone I don't pay a lot of attention to right there.

  • Hard News: Word of the Year 2011 -- The Vote!, in reply to Emma Hart,

Steve, seriously, while we were digging our arses out of liquifaction, cooking in our garages and crapping in our gardens, we were also supposed to invent a new word to describe the situation? Sorry we didn’t live up to your standards.

Whoa, I didn't read that into Steve's comment at all. I have to admit, I hadn't associated "munted" particularly with #eqnz until this thread. And I don't think that fact can/should take anything away from the experiences of those who had.
