It was a tortured, Bolger-esque performance, with grammatical errors in every sentence.

    Me thinks he lies.

Oh, Red… So, “grammatical errors” maketh a liar? If that’s the case, I’ll see you (and pretty much everyone else around here) in Dante’s Malebolge looong before the Prime Minister. Pack you togs - I believe the rivers of burning pitch and human excrement are lovely this time of year.

I just don’t think that it should take precedence over transgender equality and adoption reform

You’re not getting any argument from me or anyone else on that, because this ain’t the line for Barbara Streisand tickets. Does it really have to be a zero-sum game here? (BTW, if I'm ever such a cis-prick towards transgenders you all get a pass for one free 'bitch, please' slap. Open hand, but you don't have to take off your bling.)

  • Hard News: The scandal that keeps on giving, in reply to Stephen Judd,

Key never heard about it until just now. He’d lose face if he confessed to being ignorant, so he stalled. I’d imagine he thinks that preserving his image of being in charge is in the (N)ational interest…

You’re probably right – and 99% of the time that says nothing more than we elect human beings, with human sized egos. (Even Helen Clark, IMO, sometimes dug herself holes needlessly rather than just say “I don’t know” or “I was wrong”. It probably doesn’t help living in a media-political culture where any such admission is grasped on as a sign of weakness, lack of control or stupidity rather than a virtue.

Which makes his original performance look utterly hopeless.

Quite. "I don't know, but I'll ask for a briefing immediately and get back to you" -- only as hard to say as you choose to make it.

So there is hope for a Labour win then…

In England? Well, since Ed Miliband has perfect confidence in his own ex-Murdoch spin thing ( The Times in Tom Baldwin’s case) plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose. I know it raises its own problems, but I don't think the UK would be the only place whose politics and media would both benefit from the revolving door between Downing and Fleet Streets being bricked up.

  • Hard News: The scandal that keeps on giving, in reply to Andre Alessi,

I’m skeptical of the suggestions that these events, as interesting as they are, herald some sort of change in the culture of reporting in the UK. If the death of a well-loved public figure couldn’t stem the tide of harrassment and privacy invasion, I don’t see how a “little” corruption and collusion would.

Or something marginally more serious, like the Hutton Inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of David Kelly – which didn’t exactly paint a flattering or edifying picture of the cosy relationships between Government spin doctors and the media. But, hey, whatevs - the only good whistleblower is a dead whistleblower, right?

And so aptly timed to spray all over newspaper front pages, and so relegate Brownlee’s bodgied appointment process to page 8 (in the DomPost, anyway)

Sorry, I’m confused – who are we blaming for what at the moment? Rupert Murdoch, Mossad and their Zionist stooge John Key or the vast multi-national right-wing media conspiracy in general? Perhaps Keith Ng can do his nerd Jedi thang and run up a chart…

  • Hard News: The scandal that keeps on giving, in reply to Raymond A Francis,

Oh, I’m sure the political establishment are going to try riding the public wave of sympathy for increased regulation as far as it will possibly go.

But while the rest of the media pack are getting their Murdoch schadenfreude on, they might want to take a deep breath and think about what comes next. After all, I’d respectfully suggest there are a lot of current (and ex-) MPs in all parties will will neither forgive, nor forget, The Daily Telegraph for kicking off the expenses scandal that ended careers, and put four people in prison.

  • Up Front: How About Now?, in reply to Lucy Stewart,

I honestly don’t think the result would be as predictable as you assume.

Quite - and I think it's a pertinent factoid that the first serious (if flawed) attempt at homosexual law reform was in the name of Venn Young - who was fifty five at the time. In the US, the highest profile and most articulate conservative supporter of marriage equality is 70 year old Theodore Olson.

I've certainly seen little evidence that there's some straight line causual relationship between age and homophobia; it's a wee bit more complicated than that.

  • Up Front: How About Now?, in reply to Phil Lyth,

Hell, I'm still trying to understand why four right-wing Republican NY state senators (and Dubya's solicitor-general!) get it and our Parliament doesn't. I just know this for sure: If Australia passes marriage equality legislation before we do, the shame will be unendurable. :)

  • Hard News: The scandal that keeps on giving,

Nonetheless, Fox News has a presence on SKY Digital…

And? SKY Digital also carries BBC News, CNN, CNBC, Stratos/Triangle (which carries news/current affairs content from AlJazeera English, PBS, Deutsche Welle and others), TVNZ, Three and RT (which is a state-funded Russian network) – none of which bear the distasteful prints of the evil one.

I assume Sky Digital carries all these because they believe they might just attract and retain subscribers. Just as the movie channels aren't all 20th Century Fox all the time. Crazy old bitch that I am, I just can't find anything particularly sinister in any of the above...
