Thanks! Makes about 3 liters? Might make my own tomato sauce for it, too, got millions of them at the moment.

i caved and bought some seedlings from the shop

Yeah me too. At about 50c per plant, yielding 10 or more chilis each, it's economic without being the headache that raising seeds is. One bonus - many types are perennial. I had a second harvest from a number of plants. If I'd known that, I wouldn't have pulled out the old stems, and would have planned where they were planted a bit more carefully.

Ben I have a good sweet chilli sauce recipe that I’d be willing to share?

No need to ask! Put it up here!

I went through my notes to find out what the hot chili in my pic is. It's a Jalapeño. So not really that hot per volume, but if you take a big bite, ouch! But I've just found this site for next year's crop. That baby is currently considered to be the world's hottest chili.

Love it. You had to show you were serious.

If only the Scoville scale were more useful, one could present credentials showing tolerance to a particular level.

Now I feel bad for posting pics of my chilis in this glorious neverending summer that Auckland has enjoyed :-)

  • Hard News: Jim looks back at the big…,

OK Jimmy, sold. I'll go see Her. Also, I refused to see 12 Years a Slave for precisely the reason you end up pitching as it's flaw - too damned good. Felt the same way about Schindler's List which I never finished, was far, far too bummed out by some scenes in it. One day when I'm feeling more happy than is decent, I'll rent them both.

Thanks for the reviews. I'm an absolute miser about my film budget so I rely on good advice.

    A gateway drug!

So true. It's like the alcopop of curries. You like it most at first, but then after you develop a taste for curry, its creaminess just gets in the way.

Great to see this blog starting! Good luck for the future.

Looking forward to some good chilli suggestions, considering they’re only ripening now. The long red ones in the background were disappointing, despite being sold as “burning hot”. The foreground ones, shaped more like a small capsicum, sent me into convulsions, to the amusement of my children, when I made the mistake of taking a large bite. The orange ones are capsicums, very nice looking but I can’t say I’ve ever noticed any difference in the taste of different colored capsicums. Of course they’re nicer fresh, though.

I have no idea what the cat tastes like. It has now become my cat, having thrown itself on my mercy in a piteously thin state a few months ago.

  • Hard News: Spring Timing, in reply to Kyle Matthews,

Makes sense to give people plenty of warning and a kiwisaver scheme so that they can design their own retirement funds and have time to do so. Way not to plan for the future.

Sort of. Except a lot of people won't have very much in their retirement funds, if they earned bugger all in their lives. At least some kind of pension seems to me a basic social need. But it could be at least a little bit means tested.

  • Hard News: Schools: can we get a plan up…, in reply to barnaclebarnes,

I’m wondering if there are any plans for a new unisex high school to cater for the CBD?

It does seem to be needed. There's quite a lot of religious schools in the central area and there's ACG. Also if you go slightly out of zone there's a lot more nearby. Auckland Boys is pretty close, as is Epsom Girls. And some of the North Shore schools would probably involve shorter commutes. But as the plain vanilla option for boys, in zone, WSC is all there is. I actually avoided it, way back, commuted to Selwyn along with around 100 other kids from inner west Auckland. It had a bad reputation.

I'd say the government's plan is to wait for more private schools to pop up.

The original post referred to “mainstream”, I assume that excludes St Marys and St Pauls.

I guess. They're not state, or private, but "Integrated", meaning the state pays but they retain their "character", which I presume means they're still religiously oriented.
