  • Hard News: There's Always One,

So just who is 'this sort of person'? TV1 at mid day reported it was a Somali woman. Someone on PAS says it was a man who was arrested.

That was me. I was quoting from Radio NZ, which made a mistake when it uploaded the audio (the audio didn't say man, but the text description of the audio did). Oops.

  • Hard News: Another Big Day,

Now exactly how it all plays out will be amazing to watch, most probably Hillary will limp into the first brokered convention in 50 years. Will Queen Hillary be able to accept the VP slot (if it is offered)? Will Obama be forced to offer it to her? (it would totally undercut everything his run is supposed to be about).

I agree, and can't see a VP Clinton. My thought had always been Joe Biden (particularly if it was Obama v McCain), or perhaps Bill Richardson (though he's publicly said he doesn't want it), but someone suggested Janet Napolitano to me yesterday, which could be interesting. Certainly more likely to be the first female VeeP than Geraldine Ferraro ever was.

  • Hard News: There's Always One,

The NZ Herald says the arrested woman is Somalian.

And this bit comes Radio NZ:

A man has been arrested for hijacking a small Air New Zealand flight into Christchurch.

Maybe they should have listened to the piece before they uploaded it :-)

  • Hard News: Another Big Day,

If you want to get right down to it, if Florida and Michigan Democrats are feeling "disenfranchised" they have nobody to blame except their own state party leadership for playing chicken with a T-Rex over the timing of their primaries.

Well, Florida Democrats at least could partly blame the Republican-controlled Florida House and Senate and the Republican Governor for changing the law...

  • Legal Beagle: The Magic Number,

they've called Califormia for Clinton and McCain with less than a third of precincts reporting but huge leads (16 and 17 points respectively)
    ...
I just find it hard to believe CNN would risk getting something like this wrong after the 2000 Florida call debacle.

And though there were late calls, as I pointed out, there were also other really early calls - with 10% of precincts reporting, McCain on 41%, Huckabee behind on 35%, NBC are predicting a Huckabee win in Alabama.

  • Legal Beagle: The Magic Number,

You're right Craig, they all (NBC, ABC, CNN) called California with that proportion of the precincts reporting. My guess is something like very good exit polling combined with particular bell-weather precincts, and substantial enough leads... They've certainly been careful in a number of states, not even making predictions with 98% of votes in.

  • Legal Beagle: The Magic Number,

The prediction does include California. Obama staffers have been saying they'll lose California by 15 delegates. Clinton staffers have been saying they'll win by 25-34 delegates. MSNBC used the 34 number.

Neil - you might be right.

MSNBC is predicting the delegate position after tonight as 841 Obama vs 837 Clinton.

    Sí se puede

Perhaps the difference is that one took it from Bob the Builder (complete with Can we fix it?) and the other from César Chávez.

  • Southerly: Overheard on a Bus,

I was about to say that, although I suspect that I distinguish between the pronunciation of more words than your average New Zealander, I don't think anyone's pointed it out to me.

Then I remembered someone who congratulated me while I undergoing professional legal studies for pronouncing women correctly (they'd been pedantified by a partner in the law firm they'd been working at the previous summer).

As to whether there's a class distinction, a friend who went to a decile 10 school (not Auckland) had never heard of "three" being pronounced "free"...
