Field Theory: Hospital Pass, in reply to
It was suggested in some quarters that cruise ships be hired for temporary accommodation in Christchurch if the games were to go ahead there. Dunedin could quite easily do the same thing.
What an excellent idea. The government could set up a special committee and order a Royal Commission, it could all be in place sometime in 2012. After all, nobody else in the country needs temporary accommodation, eh?.

I think you'll find that those with years of experience would use a Gerber

I also have a Samsung, all be it a $200 one and it links by Bluetooth to my eeepc anywhere Telecom has coverage. Oh, and just to rub it in I use Opera as a browser/server.

I have also been known to carry a chainsaw in case of fallen trees. -

I think you're assuming there's a zero sum game there.
Nah, merely being disingenuous. ;-)

I really should check my facts a little better. The Government are doing something.
Cabinet has agreed to establish a Royal Commission into the Canterbury Earthquake, Prime Minister John Key has announced.
The inquiry will examine issues around the built environment in the Christchurch CBD including, but not limited to, the CTV and PGC buildings, as well as the adequacy of the relevant building codes and standards into the future.
The Royal Commission will also take into account, but not be limited by, a technical investigation already underway by the Department of Building and Housing into the performance of the Canterbury Television, PGC, Forsyth Barr and Hotel Grand Chancellor buildings.
Now, about those people living in cardboard boxes in New Brighton?.

As I said on another thread…
The actions of the police in Christchurch have done nothing but hinder the recovery by not allowing anybody to go anywhere…. by stopping people seeking out their loved ones and securing their possessions in the name of “Safety”.
And then I read…
Christchurch business people want answers as to why their “Posessions” were bulldozed with nothing said.
Leaseholder Stephen Weatherall was outraged the building had been demolished without notification.
“How can they wipe somebody’s business off the face of the Earth and not even explain why they are doing it?” he said.
He said no-one was taking responsibility for the demolitions.
“I can’t describe how I feel about Pete Scalia. They didn’t even give him a chance to get in there. They can give you all this garbage about why they did it, but his whole life has been demolished.
“He’s wiped out now. Everything he owned is just a pile of rubble."
He will not be the only one.
The priority was to make the central business district as safe as possible.
Don’t worry, everything is Bon, with Team A merry Key.

Hard News: The Wall and the Paper, in reply to
I don’t know what the maintenance problems were, other than the use of that phrase tends to be code for ‘it was too much trouble and we couldn’t be bothered’.
Well, yes. It is so hard to keep the little blighters in line, in neat rows as it were. It's so much easier to do with people. All you need is riot shields.

If you are referring to the wildflower strips all along the southern part of the motorway just before the Bombay Hills then I’m afraid you are incorrect.
I was referring to City Highways ie. St Lukes and Balmoral roads as well as a few others.
I understand that the wildflowers were replaced due to maintenance problems.
Because wild flowers need so much maintenance, how would they survive without us, eh?.

As for the cheap shot at Len, if he had that much oversight then I’d expect the flowerbeds in parks to be changed to include his favourite flowers. In this instance, he can genuinely blame the officers.
I recall that within weeks of Mayor Banks being sworn into office, even before he was sworn at in office, having the policy of wild flowers median strips and verges on highways reversed. Having them replaced by nice, middle class, inoffensive shrubbery.

$4.1m package for AMI Stadium
Mr McCully announced the Government will grant $4.1 million to allow the turf repair work to commence immediately at AMI Stadium so it will be ready for next year's season.
"The stadium is an important sport and recreation asset and revenue earner for the region, and I am pleased that we can assist to ensure it is repaired as quickly as possible," he said.
Ok then. Now that the really important stuff is sorted out, how about some houses for people to live in, you know, when you can get round to it, no hurry.

Field Theory: Japan moves, in reply to
If you’ve been hit by an earthquake and you’re near the coast, you should just assume a tsunami is a high chance.
Waiting for a TXT alert would, in that case, be rather unwise.
