  • Hard News: Art with a job to do,

The number of possible combinations 12345 vs 12354 vs …. 54321 is quite small (5! = 120) maybe half as many again for people who chose less than all 5 – Elections NZ could easily release the number who voted for each possible combination without giving up any information about voter identity

  • Legal Beagle: Voting in the Flag Referendum, in reply to Graeme Edgeler,

By "randomised" I meant "are they different on every ballot?" the only two I've seen are the same

  • Legal Beagle: Voting in the Flag Referendum,

One thing that I thought was a good idea was that the flag referendum law explicity says that flying a flag is not an election advertisment

From a purely practical point of view during the second ballot requiring people to take down all the existing flags would have been a real problem

we also received 4 ballots, 2 for the kids who are overseas, and no time to forward the envelopes to them .... I presume we can't vote on their behalf under their instruction.

It seems suspicious to me that Key's prefered flag comes up first on the ballot .... (or are they randomised?) I guess the fix is in

Our dog is old and deaf …. this year she started ignoring the mailman …. now the kids are gone she’s the only thing stopping us from going on some bigger adventures ….

John: Yeah at work we’re building stuff like that – we already sell home wireless VOIP systems (in the US) – adding sensors everywhere is cheap with existing base stations in all our customer’s homes – and integrated with your cell and computer – smoke alarms become sirens too, one smoke alarm sets all the rest off etc etc

thanks everyone - I figured it needed a story.

At the moment weirdly my day job happens to involve building cheap wireless nternet-of-things devices ... this week I'm doing window window open/close sensors .... a little late I guess - in many ways I hate the idea of putting in an alarm system, it seems so wrong, giving up some how
