  • Hard News: Radio NZ: Sailing on in…, in reply to Danyl Mclauchlan,

I’ve heard from a few friends at RNZ that the two presenters that receive the largest amount of complaints and negative feedback are/were Plunkett and Wilson. RNZ’s mostly superannuated audience considers them both ‘rude’.

Meh… I do respect the pair of them, but it’s not particularly useful haranguing subjects who don’t provide the answer you’re fishing for. (Here’s a reality check: If you don’t get what you want the first dozen times you snarl the question, number thirteen probably isn’t going to do the trick.) Also, a statement doesn’t magically becomes a question by tacking a rising inflexion on the end. Wilson’s terrible at that – and you know what? I don’t really give a flying rodent’s rectum what she thinks about anything. If she wants to editorialise, I'd suggest she push the human valium that is Chris Laidlaw down some stairs and take over his job.

There is actually a line between being a persistent interviewer, and making it more about your ego than eliciting information. Too often, Plunket and Wilson make it all about their rep for being “tough” – though, like Russell, I’ve heard the more civilized working hours at ZB have chilled him out a lot. Which is no bad thing.

Wasn’t Craig saying he was trying to listen, earlier? Or does that only apply on Emma’s threads?

I was also talking about taking ownership of one's one bullshit -- and don't bloody tell me that throwing that shit at Black (however sotto voice it may be) would be tolerated for a moment around here if her husband happened to work for Phil Goff. One of the more pleasant features of PAS is that it's relatively free of the Kiwibogian/Sub-Standard sliding scale for sexism, depending on whether you like the politics (actual or perceived) of the woman concerned.

Bit over-sensitive there. Bit over-sensitive there. It’s current company who can’t comment for employment reasons I was thinking of.

Being a lot patronising, dear. Cease and desist. 1) I’ve had a long standing objection to that canard against Black, and it becomes no more endearing because it’s couched in the passive-aggressive voice. 2) I see no reason to change my mind because my by-line happens to be in this week’s issue – due to a commission from Arts and Books Editor Guy Somerset not Black, FWIW.

Current company not expected to comment on that.

No, that’s a piece of bait far too tempting not to rise to. We all know who Joanne Black’s husband works for – build a bridge to the 21st century where femme-bots are no longer retired for holding jobs without permission from their man-trollers and get the fuck over it. Please. At last.

And also, about the quickest way to make a dick of yourself (Alright, just one of a myriad) is to get all offended on behalf of a groupd you don’t belong to.

And the masterclass in that particular form of arseholism is what I like to call Borgism: “Good” members of Collective Noun X. must adopt position Y. on subject Z. or get smote with the waggling finger of bad consciousness. Just don’t do it, m’kay? (And, seriously, isn’t it something of a no-brainer not to walk onto any feminist blog and say hello with a cry of “yo, you bitches really need to chill out and focus on some real issuez”? Whether you intentionally set out to flame-troll, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that’s probably not going to be greeted with tea, cookies and an annotated abstract of the discussion so far and a reading list.)

  • Hard News: #NetHui: it's all about you, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

I suggested that Sky employing Tony O'Brien as a full-time lobbyist representing their interests in Parliament was a case of "unusual influence" in NZ politics (deflecting potential regulation of Sky's monopoly position, for example). Several pollies there (including Sue Kedgely) didn't seem to think it was a problem but it is interesting that John Drinnan has also pointed to it as an issue worthy of attention.

I don't want to sound like I'm bagging on Drinnan, but what do you think the odds are of APN going full disclosure on their lobbying and *cough* corporate hospitality of politicians? YMMV, but I'm open to the idea of requiring lobbyists to be on a public register (and I don't give a shit if they happen to be the BRT, Chen Palmer or the CTU), but it's the soft corruption of the disco round that makes me nervous.

It’s a tragic thing to happen, but I think most likely not earthquake related.

Quite - I walk around there fairly often and must admit I tend to be a little cautious around spots like that after heavy rain. As Lucy alluded to, there's plenty of minor slippage on spots like that that are quietly cleared away. I don't want to sound callous, but what happened to Mrs Rudyy-Collie was a tragedy but I don't know what her husband thinks will prevent anything like this ever happening again aside from closing every potentially hazardous walk on the North Shore. Which, FWIW, is part of what makes the place attractive to a lot of people in the first place.

  • Hard News: #NetHui: it's all about you, in reply to Jackie Clark,

Can we talk about privilege, or rather the use of that word as a weapon of sorts?

Sure, but I think one really wonderful thing about the internet is that your experience of the world, and the perspective it gives you, is enormously different from mine (and vice versa). That's not a bad thing, or a good thing, but it sure doesn't hurt to STFU occasionally and genuinely listen to other people, and try to get your head around where folks are coming from -- even though that might be a really difficult thing to do.

And, yeah, I make no apologies for challenging myself to own a lot of under-examined privilege in my life that comes entirely from the accident of being born with a penis to middle-class parents in a First World country. I don't bother getting all angsty about it, not least because that's just ego-masturbation and condescending to people who neither need nor welcome an on-line Lady Bountiful. But being conscious of that really should make me think more carefully about how I talk about, and to, women, ethnic and religious minorities and generally towards folks who don't look, sound or live like me.

  • Muse: That Book, The Ban That Isn't,…, in reply to Rich Lock,

I also think that your edit was unnecessary: anyone daft enough to think you might have some sort of affinity for the ideas of Mein Kampf can be dismissed pretty easily.

Quite. Anyone who’d pick Andre and any kind of fascist-symp would have to be looking through a very thick pair of beer goggles. :) But I guess that’s why argumentum ad Hitlerium is such an effective de-rail. Who the hell would want even the possiblity of being smeared with that poop?
