  • Hard News: The digital switch-off, in reply to Bart Janssen,

So how do we pay for TV in the next decade?

Well, they seem to think it's fine to pay for laying fibre to the home just to sell it to Telecom at cost when it has the chance of becoming profitable. Now that is the same as NZOA funding programmes and then selling them, at cost, to the company that finds a market and that just don't happen.
    See my point?.

  • Hard News: What Now?, in reply to Sacha,

Mr Brownlee said he believed the focus that was being placed on heritage buildings when thousands of people’s lives had been disrupted by the earthquake was “undue and unacceptable”.

I really don't think the focus is on heritage buildings and for Gerry Brownlee to say otherwise is disingenuous at least. It is not an either or situation, like the USAR removing bodies from the rubble in the central city is not a reason why CD was not looking after the welfare of the people of the Eastern Suburbs. I call bullshit. The word "Agenda" comes to mind.

  • Hard News: What Now?, in reply to Matthew Poole,

And why, pray tell, should he have? His job is in Wellington,

His "Job" is in Christchurch, his office may be in Wellington but when communications are disrupted he should be close to the emergency, within radio range. We have seen plenty of people turn up in Christchurch including John Key. Are you suggesting we didn't need the Prime Minister there?.

I am appalled. I was under the impression that the Government had already declared this to be a national emergency, I now discover that this do nothing administration has just left it to the local council. Instead of getting on with rebuilding Christchurch after last September's earthquake they have done nothing other than give handouts to businesses and allowed the Police to treat those devastated people as if they were all criminals. According to the Herald their National Civil Defence controller had not even seen the Eastern Suburbs almost two weeks after the event.

Most of the response has been run by National Civil Defence controller John Hamilton. He will go to the eastern suburbs for the first time today to see the damage first-hand.

The Police have, today, allowed people to retrieve belongings, badly needed vehicles and paperwork vital to the functions of everyday life and business from the central city after saying for two weeks that it was unsafe. We now hear...

There were few reports of damage from the 4.8 aftershock - a fallen chimney, a burst water main, goods falling from shelves and an online report of liquefaction in Linwood.

If the buildings were that unstable as to be "unsafe" for limited access how come a 4.8 aftershock only brought down one chimney, did nobody even do a cursory inspection to see how unsafe these buildings were?
As I have said before, the people of Christchurch need help not hindrance from the authorities, the Police should be there to serve not stifle the ability of the people to help themselves.
Like I said, I am appalled.

  • Hard News: The digital switch-off, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

I would be impressed beyond measure if we saw TVNZ commission and screen anything like Spike Lee’s When The Levees Broke or The Wire.

Well TVNZ didn't have to make them but it would have been nice if they had, at least shown them (in something other than a totally viewer unfriendly time slot) instead we get crap TV reality shows in prime time.

(I wouldn’t dream of missing an episode of Jersey Shore, though, so you might want to discount my opinion altogether.)

You have MySky and you still watch crap?
No wonder the country's going to the dogs.

  • Hard News: Nothing important, just some tunes, in reply to Danielle,

Ah, but I pay to *not* watch any ads: MySky.

Problem there, of course, is that by reducing the revenue stream and therefore profits, the TV industry may be forced into the same dilemma that the recording industry found itself in. The recording industry came down hard on those that interfered with its profitability claiming that those "pirates" were depriving the artists of their rightful income. The result of this diminishing income stream was for the artists to revert to live performance rather than relying on royalties from recordings. I, for one, dread the day that Hitler has to perform live again.

Not unless you have many millions of taxpayer dollars under your bed

Note to self... look under bed.

Come November, we can claim it back :-)

In reality though we need Russell to stand for PM. He needs a job next year and it would be lovely to watch National’s decision to dump Media7 really bite them in the backside!

    +1 vote here. :-)
They could definitely do with a kick in the incompetence pants.

Lots of people, I suspect, but unfortunately none of the men whose opinion matters most is amongst the number.

So, you think my opinion is of no import... sob, whimper, sob sob... ;-(

  • Hard News: The digital switch-off,

Personally I would like to see a publicly funded channel showing only Documentary, Current Affairs and News with a daily discussion/forum type show discussing those shows with a satirical show for perspective.
There you go, a mission statement in three lines. ;-)
Who would be up for that?.
