  • Hard News: New Old Left?,

Last time I looked, which was some years ago, Japanese radio & TV was even more that way. Man goes "Yibble-yibble-yibble" in o what a clever fellow I am tone of voice, ditzy support-woman goes "Hai! Hai!"

Fish only take baited hooks through folly, ignorance, or desperation. Their own laws prescribe the death penalty for doing so. Presumably this is a powerful deterrent, and is the reason why so many undersized - and ignorant - juveniles fall victim to the hook. To throw a fish back is to condemn it to almost certain death at the, uh, fins of its fellows.

I once read that in a comic somewhere. It wasn't very well drawn, but I did find the idea rather haunting.

  • Hard News: New Old Left?, in reply to sally jones,

Goff’s presence could work as a moderating influence on Bradford’s so called ‘extremism’ (anti-smacking). Goff is calm and experienced to Bradford’s passion and commitment to social justice. They could work well together.

Like gay rights, the rights of children is only an issue for the reactionary fringe. Key has demonstrated that he understands this, Goff has shown a willingness to pander to reactionaries who don't matter. Sue Bradford working in some capacity with Key is probably a more realistic prospect than some dodgy deal with a man who only wishes that he was John Key.

But forswearing the Press means you'll miss out on all the really vital stuff, like the big upsurge in the night-crawling of the restless dead since the earthquake.

  • Hard News: Unreasonable people vote,

It's good to know that the Culture Warriors of the US have identified the real problem with the country: bears.

I just knew that would pop up again one day.
In my distant youth I spent a few months as a mail sorter in Sydney, where I made friends with a Canadian. One tea break we got talking with an old Australian, who'd been to visit his scientist son who worked in Canada. So, my Canadian friend asked, what did you think of the place? Oh, said Dad, the cities were very impressive, but once you got out in the wilderness it was an utter disgrace. Naturally we were keen to know what he meant by that. Well, said Dad, there were bears and things running around loose! Those Canadians, they really should be ashamed of themselves.

  • Speaker: My People,

It is utterly inappropriate to consider declining population a threat to our species at this point.

Bart, I didn't, and I don't. As you've gone to the trouble of quoting my facetious "sterilise a Brazilian" line as if it were something that I'd offered in all seriousness then I'm moved to respond. I do think that it's of some significance that we now seem to be actively poaching the labour forces of less economically "developed" countries in order to subsidise or own standard of living.

Bob, if you can't do the job, get out of the kitchen!

But all the job entails these days is turning up to eat muffins.

    - we don't need another cook!

True, we already have the ditzy faux-celebrity "mayoress". How the fuck did this happen? If Martin "curtain-twitcher-in-chief" Van Beynen's fawning drivel-piece on the Clinton visit is any indication of the mood of the local media, we're in for a few years of government by photo opportunity.

    - we do look after our own - but frequently, we need support from the state.

Once it's down to palliative care, the state is pretty much the only option for me and mine. Even if I knew where to buy morphine, my abilities don't extend beyond pushing the buzzer when the little light on the pump starts flashing. I just hope that no-one back in Fiji is missing out, because so many of their angelic young women seem to be doing indispensable work relieving the suffering of our own elderly.

  • Speaker: My People,

Maybe we could see children as something other than a liability or a cost to society.

Yeah, it's all a bit too "save the rainforest, sterilise a Brazilian".

Still, having spent rather a lot of time lately visiting at the old folks' home, I'm noticing how at least 50% of the carers are from somewhere other than NZ. And the demographic bulge hasn't even hit there yet.

The Super City election has brought into the light a political coalition of Pasifika, socially conscious Christian and anti-privilege bogan activists.
I can see McCarten and Bradford will be interested in such a new leftish beast

As bogans are, by definition, people who hit their kids, Sue Bradford's involvement can't help but be a good thing.
