  • Word of the Year 2007,

*That cup thing in Spain - does anyone with a nett worth of less than a billion bucks give a rats ass (except those of you with a long history of yacht racing in the family - you know who you are)

Well, no. It was important to those peoples' daddies, and those people are glad that their daddies died before they could see the upshot of all that funding and all that planning. In fact, those people are now convinced that we will never have the Cup again, but that the Valencia peoples should keep on having it over there, because after all, one's daddies ashes (some of them anyway) are sprinkled on that particular race start line. Otherwise those peoples don't really give a crap about the stupid thing. See, now, that's proportion.

  • Radiation: Making a list,

I've only got 22GB left on my 160GB PVR. How the heck am I meant to watch 140GB worth of TV (all recorded at LP speed) so I can clear the PVR in time for the Christmas Hols? And do the Xmas shopping. I'm seriously thinking of buying another PVR (250GB) - does this mean I have a problem?

No, IO, it means you are a skiter. Of the first order, no less. I mean, I still use video. So don't be moaning about all that TV.

Let me put it this way, if Shakespeare was pitching Othello to a Hollywood executive, the first note would be that Iago needed to have some redeeming features, and a backstory to explain his 'motiveless malignancy' as the product of being jilted by the love of his life, childhood sexual abuse, or a Vicodin habit and just caring too damn much. I'm supposed to be impressed that Californication doesn't even have the courage of its own ugliness?

Craig, really, do you listen to yourself sometimes? I love the way you talk, I really do, but could it be possible that you are over thinking this? Writer whores himself to Hollywood, hates himself for being a literary whore and so becomes a sexual whore. Simple, no?

  • Word of the Year 2007,

My vote would be for any word that has ista on the end - there are exceptions to this, Wellingtonista for one, because I like that word. Every other word with that suffix is just a bore.

  • Cracker: Kabul: A walk down the dairy,

Indeed, Damian. Here, in NZ, we all take our safety somewhat for granted. Which may be why so many Kiwis go to places where safety isn't guaranteed. I look forward to more photos and dispatches from your sojourn.

  • Hard News: The Bottom is a Magic Place,

    Don't. Ever. Move.

Not just one of the 40,000 either. There's five of us going.

Oh, Deborah. I'm sorry that this is a move that's not of your choice. However, we will look greatly forward to your take on all things Australian. It reminds of me of my friend Sally (wondrous Wellington Jewish Mama she) who, for her sins, married a doctor. Part of his learning to doctor was all these moves every 6 months, one to Portland in Oregon. They were there for a year, and I really wish I had kept her emails. They were a funny, fascinating look at another culture. Thankfully, they have been ensconsed in Berhampore for the last few years, so she's a happy camper. I hope it all goes well for you there - Adelaide is supposed to be very beautiful and at least you'll have great wine to drink and lovely food!

And given that I'm moving to Australia in just 36 days now, I'm rather hoping that Howard will be out. It looks hopeful.

    Noooo! One of the 40,000?

  • Hard News: Maoriland Calling,

Contrast Te Papa and other NZ public institutions with the British Museum, which is quietly releasing it's collection onto the web

thankyou, thankyou, thankyou - you just made me cry. I have had a love affair with Durer since first studying his work as part of my art history degree. He, in fact, is my very favourite artist. And lo and behold, the British Museum has an extensive collection of his woodcuts and engravings, and what's more, they are my most beloved of his work. How did I not know this? I've been to the BM a number of times, and never even saw the bloody things. And now, all I can do is look at them on a website. But oh, how wonderful that is. And yes, his work makes me cry.St Jerome in his study, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Such detail, such depth, so much to see every time you look at one of his prints. Extraordinary.<Sigh> I am very very happy. So thankyou, George.

  • Hard News: Because that's how I roll,

we determined that the DSL connection was faulty, and that the Wired Country was working perfectly, apart from it just not working.

I must admit to being a broadband problem virgin until recently. Very smug I was too. My xtra broadband was working beautifully - and then........ about 7 weeks ago, it all just turned to craq. Sometimes my modem lights would go blinkety blink blink like a cheshire cat on crack, sometimes they just stopped to smell the roses. I put up with it, and then finally rang Telecom. Who told me I had to do a 3 day speed test, even though it was probably my modem (a 302G) that was old, and defunct, and therefore most likely the culprit. Did the speedtest, sent it off. Got an email back assuring me that my connection speeds were completely normal and that - and I quote directly here - " It is important to know when you use the Internet you are sharing it with other users. As a result, the time it takes for your computer to receive or send information will be affected during busy periods."

The Internet is an international network so some of the factors that affect your overall broadband experience are outside our control. For example some websites limit the speed at which they send out information and sites that are further away (i.e. overseas) can be slower to download than sites hosted in New Zealand."

No shit, sherlock. After quite a long time being an online user, I think I might know that already. So I ring xtra helpdesk to tell them just how very patronising and offensive I find their email, (in Manila - ain't it grand?) and the very lovely man there said he would send me a new modem. And the point of the speed test would have been what, exactly? After years of being smug, now I am empathy personified.

I agree that Bill Ralston can write. I disapproved of him when he ran TVNZ News but find myself enjoying his columns and articles. He's a natural and I'm so glad the Listener has him and Linley (?) Boniface. I'm still seething about the Black page I'm afraid but I think the rest of the Listener is pretty damn good.

I loved that article, Maureen, such good writing. As for Joanne Black, I can't stand the sanctimonious tone she takes.

  • Cracker: Mo' Wellington,

I mean, great cause and all, but soooo many people are doing it

Yeah, that's why whenever someone tries to sell me a poppy or a pink ribbon I just tell them to fark off.

    I'm speechless.
