  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?,

Lets just say there are worse things than the local shop or being the only Che. Worse things like rabid Blue Penguins

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to Che Tibby,

Oamaru is friendly to both man and beast and I've alerted the local Tourist Authority about your attitude

Slightly related question - are Timaru and Dunedin airports functioning for normal travel from the North Island?

I stopped using Whitcoulls back in 03 or do but recently used them for Christmas gifts and they did not really impress. The books were all in stock but took up to 6 weeks to be posted piecemeal, despite ordering them as a group to the same address by 10 December. I would have been better to order from the local Amazon

  • Muse: Linky Love,

I picked up an ereader in the weekend mainly because it seemed the best way to keep buying books while not running out of space. I buy about one book a week so they tend to stack up (a standard paperback in the UK seems to be about 7-10 pounds, so 15-22$NZ, which is cheaper than NZ, iirc, where they were about at the 25-35$ mark in 07 when I left) and selling, gifting, shipping or otherwise disposing of books when moving countries was not fun and I don't want to repeat the experience.

The Kindle has a few magazine and newspaper subscriptions on offer, so I've trialled a couple and I suspect this may be one of the more useful functions. That and the 3G coverage in 100 countries included in the purchase price

I'm sure I've seen articles like that in the Herald linked above - they seem to be a regular feature of Australian/NZ newspapers.

I've started drinking the 'Stumpy' from Fernandez& Wells (and one or two other Aussie spots in London). Does anyone know if this is just an Aussie term for a triple shots, lightly smaller version of a flat white, or what? Is this even an Aussie thing?

I don't see that it is a problem that vote splitting or small parties still occurs. Surely that is one of the design features

  • Hard News: Floating the idea,

So far as I recall from growing up all the rural primary schools in North Otago had small swimming pools of some description. I don't think all of the Oamaru ones did, but then they had access to the main Council pool. Of course this was before the late 1980s -early 1990s closure of a lot of smaller rural schools - so I do not know what has happened to those pools
