...this crap about driverless cars is just a red herring from Uber, it basicly says do what we want in the way of removing regulations or we will let lose driversless cars on you.
I wouldn't be so sure. Uber is conducting tests with driverless cars in Pittsburgh and elsewhere with Ford and Volvo. They've just bought into Otto, an autonomous truck company formed by ex-Google staffers. And Toyota is investing an undisclosed sum in Uber. They're serious about this shit.
While some may see autonomous cars as science fiction, I reckon they're inevitable in the not too distant future.

Incidentally, that Herald story covers Sky's injunction to stop Fairfax using Olympic footage under existing fair use provisions. Sky lost.
However the judge banned Stuff's auto-playing of clips which effectively produced a continuous Olympics highlights reel. Fair call.
He failed to mention that Stuff's auto-playlists, especially the ones with zero relevance to the story you're reading, are one of the most annoying things about the site and should be permanently banned on the grounds of bad taste alone.

...there is a very simple approach. F**K off you arsehole and walk.
My Dad had a similarly simple solution when he was driving taxis in the 1960s. Anyone who threw up in his cab or beligerent drunks got taken straight to the Dunedin Central Police station. The cops would turn out the guy's pockets and pay Dad for the fare plus the cost of a cleanup. Then they gave them free overnight accomodation.
That couldn't happen these days, of course.

What does it actually acheive in the end? The destruction of the extremely cheap labor of millions of people who are already doing this job as well as such a system could ever hope to.

Uber’s current business model has the drivers providing the cars.
It seems quite a fantastic leap to Uber providing the means of transport.The more likely option is wealthier people buying autonomous vehicles and leasing them to Uber during downtime. That would see Uber running a good deal of the transport network and clipping the ticket on every journey, without the necessity of owning the infrastructure or having to put up with those uppity drivers.

Johnny Moore in The Press misses the Uber driver’s plight, but focuses on the tax avoidance side of things – which is possibly (and sadly)more likely to get a government interested.
Any multinational avoiding NZ tax is unlikely to upset this particular government. It's just how the world works, for some. Everyone who can afford to be seen at Davos knows that, even those who get taxpayers to pick up their bill.
Uber doesn't give a damn about its drivers with autonomous vehicles being their end game. Those wet robots may be necessary at the moment, but give it a couple of years and the game will change.
