    Parnell McMansions

All a 15% CGT does is shift the balance a little away from a capital gain mentality.

But isn't it also just as likely that, unless we can somehow increase supply of the McMansions (or the McMiniMansions) of which you speak, that the Property Prospector, or the money grubbing home owner, will slap 15% on the sale price (or the rent) to claw back the loss in capital gain? They're in 'business' after all. How many of them absorbed the GST increase?

Of course at 40% it would be more difficult to pass on.

    And what about inflation?

  • Hard News: A Capital Idea?, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

I'd prefer the "family home" (however that gets defined) not be excluded from a CGT

Can I be confused by this, and thus ask for an explanation. Isn't that the standard around the world?

And once on this slope, will we end up putting a CGT on the family jewels?

Collectables acquired for up to $500. This includes art, jewellery, stamps, etc., held for personal enjoyment. Items normally sold as a set must be treated as a set for the $500 limit. If collectables sometimes rise in value then this exemption can be an advantage to a taxpayer collecting small items.

I'm not afraid of using a vaguely scary face.

And when that doesn't work, I usually resort to my 'Mad Comic' face. Laughing children seem to require less cajoling.

    how do they work?

IME, they don't, unless you pay them the minimum hourly wage of two lollipops, free access to TV and Nintendo and Icecream on both weekend days. And that's just to finish their breakfast. You want them to put their clothes away and make their beds, you'll be needing to mortgage the house and take them to Disneyland.

I started this religion four hours ago and I’m already having to raise an army and interview for inquisitors. Do you have any idea how hard that is?

So by now you must have become legion, and the natural progression from there is a George Lucas film, right?

Yes, it is possible I have too much time on my hands right now. Better go load the dishwasher.

Scary thing is that soon all these devices will have their own IP addresses and may well be conferring with each other…

They'll probably even have their own blog. Public Laundress, or something.

There are definitely personality and/or cultural aspects to the choice of washing machine.

We bought our first front-loader from the Warhouse when they stocked AEG (oh the privilege, it burns). It was used every day for 15 years, give or take, and then we replaced it, when the motherboard failed, with another of similar lineage which is well into the 6th year. I'm sure they last a life time for some people, but we are pretty happy with the use we have got, and the clothes seem happy enough.

Don't front loaders also give you another usable surface? Laundries can be small spaces.

This. If you mount the dryer above, you have somewhere for the basket.

It is but a piece of household whiteware, and you shouldn't be letting it get all normative with you.

That all depends if he has one of these. Otherwise I wouldn't be dissing the dishwasher when it tells you where to stick your forks.
