  • Hard News: McVicar and the media,

    being called "Shakespeare"

I used to (justifiably) be laughed at for saying things like "thrice". It's not that I was actively trying to be pompous, it's just what happens when you learn a language on books.

  • Hard News: McVicar and the media,

It's a particularly NZ accent problem, I think.

I wondered about that. But then a good half of my (second year film) students used to write "woman" for the plural.

  • Hard News: McVicar and the media,

When did people forget how to say the plural of "woman"?

  • Hard News: McVicar and the media,

Roger whatshisname was good value though.

Wasn't he just? I thought the incoming editor of the HoS said interesting things too. Well, revealing at least, if nothing else.

(I screeched inwardly when he made the point that if they didn't sell enough papers than there would be *less* journalists. The HoS' ongoing War on Grammar is going to be in good hands.)

without major rejigging due to studio time contraints

Get there half an hour earlier?

I know, I know, it can't be as simple as that.

  • Hard News: McVicar and the media,

I understand the constraints, but the time factor really weighed heavily on the show this week (while it didn't for instance in the ASD episode I thought). Could have stood losing the fluff about the iPad entirely, but even so that McVicar interview was screaming for more time. His shtick of sounding so level and reasonable whilst saying the most callous things couldn't have worked for much longer I felt.

If one of the issues is the cost of editing the interviews, have you considered posting complete unedited versions on the Web like the Daily Show does occasionally?

  • OnPoint: Iraq, from the air,

If you don't approach the facts with an open mind, if you don't take care to interpret the nuances and the details, to consider alternatives, then you're just pissing in the wind, wildly casting accusations about. What good does that do anyone?

Did you find that strawman in a packet of chips? This is getting irritating.

We looked at the evidence with an open mind. We interpreted the nuances. Shit, the Web has done little else for the last week. To still think after reviewing all the evidence that it could have been a honest mistake is not being "open minded". It's being obtuse.

  • Cracker: Hot Cross Words,

But I do think being able to contract out of stuff - say being able to contract out of not one week, but all four weeks of your annual leave - could be open to abuse: Not all employment relationships are created equal.

    Yeah, no kidding. Sheesh.

  • Hard News: McVicar and the media,

I didn't ask the questions PA readers (probably) wanted to me to ask

I accept that "why are you hurting New Zealand?" may be something of an interview stopper. Look forward to the show.

  • Cracker: Hot Cross Words,

Can I just point out that in my country very few people work on Sunday - any Sunday! - and yet somehow we cope?
